It's a child's toy not a dogs bed

I bought a playmat/gym for my 5 week old baby for Christmas, the family where spending Christmas at the inlaws. So we unwrapped the mat and baby had a little wriggle on it. Then needed feeding so I was busy feeding the baby, when my mother in laws dog decided to use the mat as a dogs bed. I waited to see if they would move the dog off,but they thought it was funny and went on about how cute the dog looked,as I was feeding the little one I asked my husband to move the dog and pack the toy away. I love dogs myself and have a dog,but don't think it's very hygienic, they already let the dogs lick his face and mouth when they hold him,and don't stop them,I have to stop them. They then spent the rest of the day saying how cruel I am at moving the dog!

YANBU some dog hair can be quite coarse, I myself hate it when they find their way into my mouth let alone a tiny baby!

Deadhamsterssmell · 27/12/2013 18:01

YANBU. I love dogs and have three myself but I wouldn't want them sat on a baby's play mat or licking a baby's face. It is unhygienic and unnecessary.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2013 18:08

I waited to see if they would move the dog off

Why? Just call the dog off next time and tell them to stop the dog licking the baby's face.

Adults shouldn't have to be told this (my kids wouldn't let a dog lick a baby's face) but it seems this lot clearly need to be told the obvious by either your or your DH.

notanotherusername1 · 27/12/2013 18:09

I love my dog but he would never be allowed to do this. What is wrong with some people to think its ok and funny.

As for allowing the dog to lick any face let alone a babies. Angry

I am fuming on your behalf, it's vile, dirty and just unacceptable and they are vile for allowing it. You stick to your guns and don't allow any of it. Hope you have backup.

JumpingJackSprat · 27/12/2013 18:10

Don't leave it on the floor then when the baby isn't on it. How s about exercising some common sense and removing the mat from where the dog can get on it.

shelley1977 · 27/12/2013 18:16

YANBU I grew up with dogs, had a dog & cats yet I wouldn't let then use baby toys to lie or play on/ with.

sykadelic15 · 27/12/2013 18:26

I totally agree of course with dogs licking and depending on whether it's an inside or outside dog about them being "dirty".

Don't let anyone tell you cats are cleaner because they clean themselves... they do... with their TONGUE! You touch a cat you may as well shove your hand in it's mouth and rub it's butt 'cause that's what's all over it. Cat's are absolutely filthy for that reason. Many people don't bathe their cats because they "clean themselves". My dogs get baths and their teeth brushed (and an oral spray for plaque)... cleaner than any cat.

elliebooboo83 · 27/12/2013 18:32

Worraliberty I only waited less than a minute just to give them a chance, because I didn't want to sound OTT,the dog doesn't listen come when called, you might as well talk to a brick wall,it's not really been well trained! Me and DH have said before about the dogs, but they can't seem to see there is anything wrong with it,luckily have a great DH who agrees with me and backs me up if I am in the right!,otherwise they are wonderful inlaws, have been very supportive and helpful,it's just the dogs that can cause a problem

Maybe its just me but we have always had an unwritten rule in our family dogs do not come in the same room as babies or small children under any circumstances,to much of a health risk and I don't care what anyone says some dogs can turn on a child in a second weither people present or not and then it's too late.Get your OH on your side to stop this practice now.

notanotherusername1 · 27/12/2013 18:45

I agree with you glamanana. No babies or toddlers in our family at the moment but if there was our much loved dog would be in another room. I cringe when I see little ones being allowed to climb on dogs or crawl on the floor with a dog. I never see it as cute, just an unnecessary danger to place a child in. Never think any dog is 100% trustworthy because they are not. No animal should be licking a humans face or coming into contact with a baby.

helenthemadex · 27/12/2013 18:58

really thats vile why did they not move the poxy dog, any idiot can see that is not hygenic around a newborn

Midgetm · 27/12/2013 19:03

YANBU. Our dog loved laying on the baby gym. We would always get him off it. I honestly don't think it would do a baby any harm but its grim to have a newborn baby covered in dog hair.

formerbabe · 27/12/2013 19:21

I think that's vile...yuk, yuk and even more yuk!

Catsize · 27/12/2013 20:25

Disgusting.

Next time the dog goes to lick your child, go and lick one of the outlaws' faces. If they object, tell them that at least you haven't just been washing your bum with your tongue. I assume.

Tailtwister · 27/12/2013 20:45

Yuck! I love dogs, but a baby's play mat is no place for one.

Just be straight and say you don't want the dog on there. It's not healthy for the baby.

Capriccioso · 27/12/2013 20:46

It's not just hygiene though, is it? If the dog gets territorial over the baby gym, there'd be more than hair and slobber to worry about...

chocolatemademefat · 27/12/2013 22:18

YANBU! Some dogs eat their own waste - I wouldnt be having it anywhere near a baby - and I had a dog when my son was born. dogs can always be replaced - no matter how much they are loved and 'one of the family'. if any other family member was licking faces it would just be too weird. and get it off the playmat - how gross are these people. Would they like you walking around on their sheets with your shoes on?
