I'm fuming. BIL has just texted DH to say he's now not coming here for Christmas Day & is instead going to his gfs. My parents have included him in food amounts etc & because he was an odd number (DH & I, PIL, my parents) have bought a considerably bigger turkey because he is a big eater.

Every year we've hosted & he has never contributed or offered any help. He comes in, eats, drinks & sits around. Our parents (both sets) & us have paid for Christmas food on a rota - he is 38 & has never even brought a bottle of wine.

AIBU to be upset he's left it this late to cancel?

YANBU.

Even though it sounds as if your Xmas could be considerably enhanced by his absence, chopping and changing on invitations is just plain rude. Whatever time of year.

There are all sorts of reasons why people might want to have Christmas away from their family. That means you turn down the invitation. Not accept then back out late on.

Sounds like it will be better without him and you'll have more leftover. But yeah, really late to cancel.

I can't say I'm unhappy he's not coming, but just annoyed. I think he's always planned this as his gf seemed a bit confused when I saw her this week & said for her to pop round in the evening so she could see him (she has a huge family who always go to a local pub - she declined our invite here).

GrrrrrAngry

Exactly same with my brother, except he didn't tell us I pushed him for a confirmation as my DM was clucking about numbers.

More champers & food for the rest of us & no slob winding up the kids & doing sweet FA to help.

YANBU to be upset about the short notice though, but every cloud etc.

YANBU, don't even invite the bugger next year.
