Another Christmas card one!

My mother sends a Christmas card to me ('to my daughter') and one to each of my DSs ('to my grandson'), one to me and DP ('to my daughter and her fiance') and then one to all of us (usually one like 'to the family')

My brother is 16 and still lives at home so she buys his and makes him write them too so we also get 2 x 'nephew', one 'sister' and one 'sister and DP' (still pains my mum its DP and DH!)

So from the 2 of them, the 4 of us get 9 cards!

And she expects the same back so 2 x grandma, 2 x uncle, 1 x mum, 1 x brother and 1 x the family so I have to buy 7 cards for 2 people to cover all relationships...please tell me this is not he 'done' thing and I am indeed being not being unreasonable, its cost me a fortune in postage alone this year!

Jesus Christ!! That's just plain weird.

Wabbitty · 23/12/2013 14:04

YANBU. Definitely not the done thing

mumaa · 23/12/2013 14:04

Just ridiculous!!

LonelyShepherd · 23/12/2013 14:05

Ridiculous... but is she my MIL? Grin

DingDongUriGelleryOnHigh · 23/12/2013 14:06

You're killing the forests!!!

Rissolesfortea · 23/12/2013 14:06

I dont even send special family cards anymore. £5+ for a piece of card! And then the postage, if you put the wrong stamp on for an oversized card the receipient then has to go the po and collect and pay extra.

Its a card out of a pack now or nothing.

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 23/12/2013 14:08

That's mad. For next year, though, could you not put them all in a single A5 envelope with a single stamp?

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 23/12/2013 14:08

DingDong I know, if we ever have a 3rd DC, we're going to have to plant a tree every year just to off-set the card mountain that we exchange every December!

AND she keeps them! Every one from every year ever. And got mightily pissy with me when I mentioned mine hit the recycle bin come December 26th, I had to backtrack and say they were all in the attic.

No that is not the done thing! One card, one family.

picklesrule · 23/12/2013 14:13

haha she could be my MIL, I was just saying to DH that 90% of our cards are from the same members of his family all addressed to us individually.. I refuse to buy the named cards in return though I hate them!

AntiJamDidi · 23/12/2013 14:16

The only cards we send are the ones dd2 makes. So that's 4 cards in total.

It's definitely NOT the done thing to send ridiculous numbers of cards to cover all relationships.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2013 14:18

Your mother is bonkers. Don't humour her, or next year you'll be sending cards to the dog, cat, hamster and all the little garden gnomes too.

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 23/12/2013 14:23

Remus if my mum had her way, we'd be sending Christmas cards to the dog! she's already sent a 'to my mummy' one from the dog to herself!

There are some cracking threads today but this one wins as the weirdest! Time for an intervention?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/12/2013 14:27

To HERSELF?!!!

Call 999 - she is a danger to herself.

ilovepowerhoop · 23/12/2013 14:41

my mum gets a card out of a box and I drop it off to her so saving stamp money. I also dropped cards off for 2 of my brothers to hers as I figured she would see them before me. They also came out of a box and may well be the same as the one I gave to her!

TheSylph · 23/12/2013 15:07

Well I just laughed so much I had a coughing fit!
My initial reaction was that is was funny enough to keep going but I have calmed down now. I would send one from all of you to all of them but get each person to write an individual message to both of them.

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 23/12/2013 15:50

Sylph they are both under 2, not much you can get a 4 month old to write!

Hand prints, lovely!

HavantGuard · 23/12/2013 15:54

Ok. That's a little different. On the plus side you can pick up next years cards in the sales to keep costs down!

HavantGuard · 23/12/2013 15:55

You could go for escalation and get your DF to buy a 'To My Future MIL' one from Moonpig.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 23/12/2013 16:42

Even I think that is too much. The number of cards should not exceed the amount of people - 4 people 3 to 4 cards max or 1 to the whole family. So one to the grown ups (in my case Sister and BIL) and one each to the children - 4 people 3 cards. If it is aunties and uncles, they get one card to all of them.

I make my own so I just write inside "To a special Mum and Grandma", am I heck sending 2 cards to the same person.
