to hire a nanny without doing a DBS/CRB check.

I want to hire a babysitter/occasional nanny. She is a student, her references are all excellent and will be looking after LO 2 evenings per week.

DBS/CRB check seem like a lot of hassle. Besides, it will only tell me if she has been prosecuted, which I doubt because she's very young and well... yes, appearances, she looks really normal.

AIBU to be thinking of skipping the DBS/CRB check?

What would you do?

Also, I've just learnt that, as an individual, I can only request a basic check, that will not tell if she has been banned of caring for children and vulnerable adults, only if she has unspent convictions. Is this better than anything?

It's better than nothing, but at 18 it probably won't show much as I assume under 18s info probably wouldn't show on a basic.

Do you know her at all or is she a complete stranger?

slippytoes · 19/12/2013 16:06

She is a stranger. I know the names of her parents, who live not too far from us (although I don't know them personally). Also, before I offered her the job I did a basic google search and no red flags. Lastly, all of her references have spoken really well of her and LO liked her a lot too.

I think CRB checks are silly. They prove nothing but not caught.

Do what you think is best.

I would follow up the references (if you havent already) and check that they are genuine.

thanks squakytoy, what would you do? She gave me the email addresses and I wrote to them... I probably should ask for their numbers and call them too.
