Whenever I don't feel well and I mention this to DH instead of sympathy and offers to provide lemsip etc. he immediately develops a worse version and goes to bed. Is this a normal part of married life or is he special?

Yes dh says I'm unsympathetic but he spent a week and a half in bed with norovirus while I had one day in bed after I took dd to nursery (and picked her up). I'm not sure exactly what would qualify for me being sick enough for him to take a day off work or not be sicker, hospitalisation probably...not that I'm bitter Xmas Grin

My dh saw a consultant today and told him what Google had diagnosed, he was correct, and is over the moon that he may need surgery and 6 weeks off work. Of course the consultant said it will probably be sorted with physio but it's like he didn't hear that ....

Sound like how it goes in this house too. It's not a "man" thing, it's a pain in the arse thing.
