To want the "Peru Two" to stay in Peru?

I honestly don't know if IABU to want them to serve the whole of their sentence in Peru and not part of the UK?

They knew what they were doing and knew the risks. It would deter some people from doing in the future too.

But on the other hand they are young girls just starting to live their life and are going to have pretty much all of their 20s taken away from them.

I'm quite conflicted.

There's well established procedure for international prisoner transfers so sentence can be served in home countries. We export prisoners as well as import them (IYSWIM).

I don't think they should be excluded from this arrangement.

They look fit and well. I would want them here if their prison was unable to meet their basic needs.

i remember when they got arrested and there was a thread on MN about them,so many thought they were innocent or set up,there be the ones saying they should serve their sentence in the UK im sure

Couple of points. If you read Forget You Had a Daughter she says that in many ways prison in the UK was worse than Thailand (in her case). It isn't necessarily going easy on them to have them back here. It does mean that prisoners (those we send and receive) have the chance to see family who have done nothing wrong so have a right to contact.

Secondly, there is some talk that the US in particular make sure that drug smugglers like these are caught in a country that has nasty prisons because they want it to be a deterrent. Why should the Peruvians, Thais or whatever have to pay to lock our offenders up and why is it OK for us to choose to condemn prisoners to treatment we wouldn't put up with in our own prisons?

I read a memoir of a girl of got done smuggling in thailand, she soent a. Umber of years there, then fought to spend the rest of her time in the UK, whcih she one. The last few years of her sentence were then served in the UK. She found that despite the better basic conditions that it was far far worse as you were locked up, often by yourself for hours an hours whereas in Thailand though it was hideously overcrowded and illness was rife it wasn't nearly as psychologically damaging.

I would just let them go free actually. We all make mistakes and its not like they killed anyone. They took a chance to make some money, it didn't pay off. They have already spent a substantial time in a Peruvian jail, let that be the end of it. They have been punished enough.

They should stay in Peru for crimes against eyebrows.

Oh yes and for smuggling drugs that cause nothing but misery to communities.

There is no reason to be harsher to them than to others.

I must be going soft in my old age because if it was up to me they would be back on British soil, if only for their parents benefit. We are so bloody stupid when we are young and even though I was not a drugs mule I did make many wrong decisions and pray that my own children are not as weak, stupid and irresponsible as I was.

I'm sure I'd want my daughter here rather than there but hey she's 2 and can't even say drug let alone smuggle them but I don't get that line of thought of "its better for the family if they're here". They did wrong in Peru. They did wrong knowing that the potential for a prison sentence was high. When they did that they put that awfulness on to their parents, why should the authorities make it easier for the parents???

They will still be punished by being in prison here.

I think they should come back. They will still be serving their time after all.

They shouldn't be a drain on Peru's system just as overseas nationals shouldn't be a drain on our penal system [if they commit a crime in UK].

They are our problem and we should help get them back on the right path. I believe the penal system should be about rehabilitation as well as punishment.

I know Dirty but should it be policy to tip off the Thais, Peruvians, whomever just to get them banged up in conditions that the authorities wouldn't put up with at home? I know from their POV it is right they are locked up there but as a matter of policy should governments use other countries' shitty prisons as a deterrent?

I think they should come home because it is easier on all their extended family who this will impact on, if they have brothers and sisters they will suffer if the parents have to go to Peru all the time, same for cousins, aunties and uncles. They are neither of them islands and it is not fair to mess up all the other lives because they were idiots.
