Took DT's age 2.10 to a story telling session at the library this morning; we haven't been before.

They were having snacks afterwards (I had contributed so wasn't freeloading - a friend had told me about it). DS was trying to take more than one of the plate of brownies that this woman was handing out. Said brownies had been cut up into quite small pieces because there was a lot of little ones there. I was getting a tissue for DD to blow her nose. Before I could get to him to stop him from trying to grab them, the woman turned to him and said "you're a greedy little boy".

I just thought it was a bit cheeky to speak to someone else's child like that. Am I being precious?

Sorry if I don't come back straight away. I still have them with me and at present they are trying to dismantle Christmas tree ...

not really. Its a horrible thing to say. She could easily have said, "no sweetheart, just one each" and achieved the same result.

Very rude! I would have said "I beg your pardon?!" and fixed her with my best glare.

She was rude. Even if she thought he was greedy she could have just said "that is greedy" rather than "you are greedy" he is only two though so tbh it would have probably gone over his head. Some people arent nice, especially to dcs. Dont take her negativity onto your shoulders, it's her problem, forget about her and teach ds to just take one in future.

I thought it was way out of line but was at the other side of the table and would have had to race over there knocking people out of the way to get to her to say something. Either that or use a loud voice to her, which I really wouldn't have wanted.

I agree with you You're she really was just awful. She's a Childminder, I found out later; makes you worry what she says when there're no adults around.

I know he needed to be corrected but he's learning. He's a hungry child but absolutely the correct weight for his height.

Definitely rude. I've volunteered at various reading and play sessions, and have said more or less what Fairylights said. It sounds like the rude woman doesn't realise you can be firm without being unkind.

Well she couldve just said "we have to share with our friends so we are having one each" theres a way of saying things to children,your own and other peoples.

Once at a playgroup I was helping at we had a selectionof biscuits to offer as it was a childs birthday. One little boy came up and took a fistful of biscuits and gave the cheekiest grin ever...I stuffed another two in his pocket.

His mother was so apologetic, and a bit embarrassed I think. I just love those toddler moments!

And I agree a child should never be told they are anything negative only their actions are negative and they will learn...eventually...they should be allowed to be cheeky there is only so long they have to get away with it.

Aw beautifully put Clanger. You co-conspirator you . Also fully agree with everyone about separating the behaviour from the child. Horrible to go around awarding labels to little children. My DS has the loveliest nature. He's very much aware of other children's feelings. He just has a seriously sweet tooth.
