First world dilemma: Should I get a new coffee table?

QuintessentialShadows · 26/11/2013 12:40

I have really ugly birch veneer coffee table that cost £13 new in its day. It is rectangular, and functional and with a shelf under.

But I really yearn for a proper wood rustic coffee table, in oak.

Should I treat myself? I know that some people struggle to buy their children Christmas presents, and that life is shit and all that, and here am I flaunting not only that I am the owner of a coffee table, but it is not good enough and I want a new one. I am feeling really guilty. Sad

I can order it today, from Cargo, it is £179, and I can pick it up from store in 2 weeks. I am just thinking, ARGH, it can be dhs Christmas present for me.

Go for it. I made the mistake of buying a TV stand on ebay for 99p. Now I need a lamp to fill the space left by the old one and a new coffee table to match. Most expensive 99p ever, I think.

I think I will go for it. The small pleasures in life, eh? It is not like I keep indulging myself with new furniture and stuff a lot.

Go for it. Have it as a Christmas present if it makes you feel better.

claig · 26/11/2013 13:03

Go for it. Don't feel guilty. By spending money, you are helping business and employment. The economy is made up of lots of different sectors and furniture is one of them. Don't fall for the hairshirt philosophy that is fashionable among some greens and socialists.

Hercy · 26/11/2013 13:27

Why on earth would you feel guilty?

BunnyLebowski · 26/11/2013 13:30

Do it!

We had a crappy studenty coffee table until I treated myself to a gorgeous mango wood one like this one last year.

I love it and it makes lounging and drinking tea even more pleasurable Smile .

monicalewinski · 26/11/2013 13:34

Yay! I love first world problems, and I like furniture.

Get the new coffee table!!

Merry xmas

QuintessentialShadows · 26/11/2013 13:35

I don't have a coffee table, ust a broken down old nest of tables that DD has her dinner on sometimes, a sort of magazine rack and "george" the old box (he is called george because it came with a ghost, i named it george). Am now thinking i should have a coffee table?

Should i have one? Trouble is, if i do it will become A SURFACE, people will put stuff on it, any surface is game in this house, stuff appears and then i have to tidy it up, it wont spread the stuff, there will be more stuff.

But Quint, your coffee table sounds as much use as a chocolate teapot so yes, you need a new one, but please spare a thought for folk like me who's room set up doesn't lend itself to a coffee table and they have to settle for a vile pine nest of tables their MIL brought them from ARGOS

LEMisafucker · 26/11/2013 13:42

oh, bunny - that is amazing! I could not only have a new surface for people to pile stuff in, i could jam the draws full of useless shit too

Brandnewmamma · 26/11/2013 13:45

Go for it... Why not if you can

ViviPru · 26/11/2013 13:50

I've been having this exact same dilemma! Here I will prove it... fixated by oak coffee tables.

I've ordered the BHS one...

ShatnersBassoon · 26/11/2013 13:52

I bought a new coffee table this week. It's got drawers and it's oak and it's made me very happy Grin

Go on, buy one that you'll like looking at.

QuintessentialShadows · 26/11/2013 13:59

Vivi - can I nick that pinterest page, we have a very similar taste..... But I am also twee enough to like stuff here www.facebook.com/CountryLifeAndOtherPassions (copy and paste)

LEM See, my coffee table has a large brass dish, with acorns, and nuts and stuff the kids have picked in the woods, and candles. Not room for much else... Maybe just a cup of coffee....
