Can i do this?

ShoeWhore · 20/11/2013 21:15

Yes YABVVVU.

A friend of mine left a candle burning on top of her TV, the TV blew up and burned her house down. It took over 6 months to put the damage right. Thank goodness noone was hurt.

sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:17

Actually on the tv or on the unit beside it? I'm confused easily done I have candles beside the tv right now, I didn't know it was bad..... is it bad?!

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:20

On the glass unit itself. Infront of the tv, but on the same shelf as the tv.

I have then on my table over the other side of the room. But they are too far away. The only other place they would fit, would be the tv unit as they are on like a black tray, in individual candle glass golders. Very pretty.

My other option is to buy a coffee table, but i dont have the funds just to buy one for some candles i like

Holders not golders. Silly phone. Excuse typos

I must be missing some important issue. What is the issue?

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:23

Candles on tv stands. Is it acceptable or unacceptable?

OP posts:
sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:24

I'm with you Bue I had no idea this was an issue on any level.... Why would having candles beside your tv be bad?!

I feel I'm missing something and am going to be ridiculed for it!

lurkerspeaks · 20/11/2013 21:25

Unreasonable.

I also know of a massive tenement fire that was started this way. No one was injured but 4 households were homeless for months as a result.

The reason it is an issue is that fire and electrical appliances on standby is a bad combination… and the vast majority of domestic TVs live on standby.

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:26

I dont know if they would be. Which is why im asking.
This thread proves i worry about simple things far too often. Hmm

OP posts:
ConventGarden · 20/11/2013 21:26

DONT DO IT.

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:28

Ok im not going to now. Im too confused over whether it is ok or not.

Some feel it is fine - others say it is dangerous. Im too scared now haha

Does no-one remember the Brookside fire started by a tealight on a tv?????

sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:31

Ok, at the risk of being outed as a total thicko.... I still don't get it!!

My tv is on I'm a celeb my candles are on the tv unit at either end of it. I'm sat about a metre away..... why is this bad?! So long as I don't leave the room (which I wouldn't) and move them when I goto bed - why is it bad??

I'm not trying to be difficult, I genuinely don't get it!

sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:32

-- < tv
O O < tea lights

diagram of my tv / tea light configuration!

sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:32

Hmmm, that so didn't work!

Panzee · 20/11/2013 21:33

Get battery tea lights.

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:33

Well that is the exact thing i want to do sillymilly i also wouldnt leave them.

Sthe candles wouldnt be ON the tv. Just the unit.
I never watched brookside

OP posts:
AnythingNotEverything · 20/11/2013 21:36

Surely it's ok if you never leave the candles unattended while lit?

Otherwise I don't get it either.

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:39

sillymilly do you do this ofen?

OP posts:
Meglet · 20/11/2013 21:40

Yabu!

I used to type up fire investigations, (nearly) always bloody candles or drunk people starting chip pan fires. Put me off candles for life.

Candles are a garden only thing in this family.

colleysmill · 20/11/2013 21:41

Iirc in brookie they put the tealight on top of the tv directly on to the plastic casing and it melted through.

I tend to err on the cautious side with candles, they give off more heat than you often expect

sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:42

I do it nearly every night, it just never occured to me it would be an issue!

Ok, why is it being near the tv any worse than it being on a seperate coffee table a few foot away from the tv? Obviously if they are always attended.

I feel I'm over invested in this now!

wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:44

Well, if you do it often. Thats good enough for me.
I think everyone else thinks im putting them directly onto the tv.

They are in glasses, on their own little table. They are only tealights

OP posts:
wontletmesignin · 20/11/2013 21:45

On their own little table, which will be placed onto the tv stand. Infront of the tv

OP posts:
sillymillyb · 20/11/2013 21:55

Oh gawd, the pressure - please don't burn your house down on my say so!!

I have left my candles lit and on the tv unit though
