Supervision at cub sleepover

My so has just come home from a cub sleepover at the cub hut. He told me that the cubs slept in the cub hut whilst all the cub leaders slept in a separate building next door but not adjoining. Also, the cub hut was left unlocked all night. I am absolutely fuming at this lack of supervision and just want to know if others would feel the same?

You're not allowed to sleep in the same room as children. When wedo beaver sleep overs we have to sleep in a pop up tent I the room so we aren't actually with the children

How old are they?
DS used to do cubs, they were often given responsibilities that might seem a bit ahead of them, but the idea was that they had been prepared by the activities they do. DS was able to cook fairly independently at 8.

How old? My sons slept in a separate building to the main house (sleepout in the garden) when we were on holiday. It was unlocked overnight so they could get out to the outside bathroom for the loo.

Your situation wouldn't have bothered me at all tbh.

I bet he loved it - and presumably they're safe and sound. I'd thank the cub leaders profusely for their time and tell DS what a big brave boy he's been... how trustworthy he and the other boys are etc.

The leaders are not allowed the sleep in the sme room as the cubs. At cub age they will be camping out and sleeping in tents with other cubs whilst leaders sleep nearby, all perfectly normal.

Honestly, YABU. This is standard procedure and will have been closely risk assessed. any leader arranging a sleepover will have a nights away permit - so have been trained and assessed by experienced leaders. Before any night away, a shed load of paperwork will also have been completed and checked. If you have any complaint, raise with your CSL or GSL.

What exactly do you think might have happened?

At 7&10 I would have no problem at all with those arrangements - I would be fine with it now and mine are 5&7!

YABU to be even mildly annoyed, let alone absolutely fuming.

I'm surprised they didn't sleep in a tent in the hall with them.

However, imagine if they'd been in tents. Think about it, anyone can get into a tent. It rarely happens. The same with this I imagine.

Volunteer yourself. alternatively ask more questions and don't send your child.

They are volunteers...,your child is unharmed ..you sent your child without bothering to check whether the sleeping arrangements were acceptable to you...

YABU. This is standard practice. The rules have been followed, risk assessments will have been done, the leaders will have had training and permits.

That sounds perfectly normal if the hut is only one room (which it sounds like it was). I would bet the leaders were up and down checking constantly in the night and the children were in and out of the leaders' hut too.

YANBU. I wouldn't be comfortable with that.

That's how it works. If you had asked in advance they would have explained it to you. No point being angry now at volunteers who gave you free child care for a weekend while your son enjoyed himself.

I really appreciate the work and time of the volunteers and, of course, thanked them afterwards. It didn't occur to me to check that an adult would be sleeping with the children as I just assumed they would be. I was just very surprised at this.

You assumed, you didn't ask. They are following a policy agreed within a large organisation. There will be reasons for it.

Well now you know. Whether they're in a building or tents, adults will not share a sleeping space with children, and girls will not share with boys.

Why would you want an adult sleeping in the same room as the children? What for?

And why would you want them locked in? Far more dangerous IMO.

Im a Beaver leader and we either sleep in separate rooms or a tent. We are not allowed in the same room as beavers without another leader there. We can not even take them to the toilet.

So yes. YABU.

There were 4 leaders there (3 were males) and they all slept in the building next door.

I think it is very lax not to look up the Scouting rules ,which are very clear, and then complain afterwards.

I really hope you've not mentioned the fact that you're fuming to the leaders and that you're listening to people here. They were following national guidelines.
