to wonder why the hell I can't buy a decent satsuma

Honestly - they are either hard and shrivelled or they have impossibly thin peel and end up being a squishy mess.

This is not right. What the hell are our supermarkets/growers/importers doing to them?

I am seriously very cross.

yes yes! i was thinking the same just now.

clementines are what I usually get, they seem to be the more reliably nice tasting, pip-free ones.
but can't always get them

MuffCakes · 11/11/2013 14:45

I am eating a lush one from asda atm, I only like satsumas hate clementines blurgh

HerrenaHarridan · 11/11/2013 14:46

Because its winter and they are out of season!

funnyossity · 11/11/2013 14:48

Herrena I thought they were in season all year round? (That's what a lemon farmer told me about lemons so I'd assumed all citrus were the same.)

I had some nice-tasting ones from Aldi last week , they did look a bit manky though.

MuffCakes · 11/11/2013 14:49

They're not out of season there only around now till christmas, satsumas are christmassy!

ShinyBauble · 11/11/2013 15:09

I thought they came into season about now Harridan?

BaronessBomburst · 11/11/2013 15:19

I think it's because they are not yet properly in season and they will have been forced. Give it a week or two then try again. Or go to Lidl as their fruit and veg is usually good.

DH bought some slightly manky ones and I just whizzed them up with cinnamon and kiwis to make smoothies.

TSSDNCOP · 11/11/2013 15:21

They need to be small and firm. Too big and they get too sweet and their skin doesn't fit right. They ARE November/Decembers fruit du jour.

Clementines are beyond revolting. Too sweet, the segments are too fat and I can't get that white shit off them.

stillstandingatthebusstop · 11/11/2013 15:25

I got some lovely satsumas from ASDA as well.

ShinyBauble · 11/11/2013 15:26

I don't like clementines either. They taste slightly off to me. I always great through about a ton of satsumas in December.

PseudoBadger · 11/11/2013 15:27

Yes! For about 2 days they are perfect. Either side, not so much.

Dawndonnaagain · 11/11/2013 16:20

Got ten for two quid from our local market last week, they're lush!

Floralnomad · 11/11/2013 16:23

I've had lovely satsumas from tesco, asda Morrisons and M&S this year.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 11/11/2013 16:28

I'm enjoying lush ones from aldi
