Bit of background, we live in a nice enough road, london suburbs, not huge houses, pitched at young professionals. There's lots of nice cars on the road - Aston Martin, Bentley, a Mercedes wrth about £200k! It's set back from a busy road, so I imagine its quite enticing to thieves.

We've had a few break ins over the last couple of months, they cleaned out a few doors down a couple of months ago, and last week the Aston Martin got stolen.

This morning, the dog barked and went to the window as a plain white transit van was reversing onto our drive (he's quite territorial and will normally bark if a Car/person comes near the house). So I stood by the window watching this van. It remained stationary on our drive for 1-2 minutes then drove off and parked further down the road. After a good few minutes, I saw a man get out with what looked like a toolbag and walk towards a house (I couldn't see what happened then because of the angle)

I don't know if its anything untoward, and it could easily be a workman of some sort. It's just all the pausing (and recent events) which has made me suspicious. If you turn around on someone's drive, surely you don't pause for long, and there was also a long wait before he got out the van.

I've never called 101 before, so don't know if they'd rather you report things like this to be on the safe side, or whether I'm being completely paranoid. What would you do?

Meant to say, I noted the reg plate, so would be reporting that

I wouldn't as I see this happen in my street. Its normally people just checking the address and making sure they are in the right place

Maybe you could go and have a look? The driver was most likely just checking his phone or satnav or something like that.

Thisismyfirsttime · 11/11/2013 10:59

If it was a legitimate workman he might have stopped and paused because he was checking the address or calling the person whose house he was going to, calling his head office to tell them he was there etc etc. I'd probably wait to see if he came out soon with anything (if I could be bothered and I was concerned!)

Take your dog for a walk passed the house they headed towards Wink

PatoBanton · 11/11/2013 12:04

Call them

in the light of recent events definitely call them

I did report it in the end, and let them know there was a good chance I was just being paranoid and apologising for that.

The boys in blue turned up about 2 minutes later, made some checks, spoke to me, and it all turned out to be innocent.

I'm really not a curtain twitcher so do feel bad for wasting their time, but they were very nice about it and report any suspicions in the future. The car that came when they stole the Aston Martin last week also waited on our drive for a minute before turning round and subsequently stealing a car. So I think I just would have felt too bad not doing anything if it had been anything untoward.

Stupid thieves making me feel paranoid in my own home :(

I was driving home at gone midnight on Saturday and it's a main road but very quiet at that time of night, I was passing through village just before ours when I had to go around a small lorry pulled over, as I passed he started flashing his lights over and over and it continued for a few minutes until I was out of sight. My first reaction was car jackets/rapists! So I didn't stop but when I got home a couple of minutes later I'd convinced myself someone was having a heart attack and trying to attract help! Rang 101 and felt like I was being silly. Havnt heard back so hopefully it was all ok but I just felt that if I didn't call then heard the next day something had happened I would have felt terrible
