To think that Poundland might have sold me fake Colgate?

Just that really. Purchased the other day, same brand I normally use, so I thought great.

Got home and it tastes a bit different and has a Thailand address on the back (it does say Colgate/Palmolive at the top of the address though).

Really don't want to put fake toothpaste in my mouth. Doubt Poundland would purchase fake goods but if they didn't know maybe?

Am I just being paranoid?!

Do you not think they have genuine brands in other countries?

They have the connection to Thailand but sadly, they also do a lot of environmental damage in the manufacturing of their products, which is why I will not use their products, Poundland or otherwise.

Brands have different recipes in different countries.

I don't know why but I know that, as an example, diet coke tastes different in different countries. Doesn't mean it's fake.

It's the same brand.

Palm oil. It's in so many bloody products. Colgate-Palmolive have had huge exposure for their irresponsible activities in Asia.

I watched a documenty on either poundland or another one of that type of shop. And they explained that one of the reason they can sell so cheap is that import then buying direct from the manufacturer.

Of course it's not fake. British branded goods are also available in other countries with other labelling.

I think it's a bit simplistic to say that it absolutely isn't a fake. It's highly unlikely, given that you bought it in Poundland, but you'd be surprised what is faked these days.

I bought Arm and Hammer toothpaste from our local Pound Shop. It had a slightly different name from the other varieties, (Ultra White, Super White,etc) so I went on the Arm and Hammer website which listed all the varieties and there didn't appear to be one of the name I bought. Felt uneasy so emailed their website to see what they said. Unfortunately they never replied! So a bit unsure about some of the Pound Shop stuff now.

A major chain like pound land can't risk selling illegal fake products under the brand name. They could sell "fake" similar products with a different name, I saw an advert once that said a lot of companies copy the branding of the big names because customers trust the m. ( colouring, shape of bottle, font etc). But if it says Colgate then it has to be Colgate

They get stuff cheap because they source it from different countries etc. I used to like getting the hair removal cream from there because it was stronger than the UK version of the brand.

Could be fake. Think of the horse meat scandal. That was unexpected.

I thought it could be imported stuff, just a bit disappointed it tastes different, I guess you get what you pay for!

Alot of their stuff has foreign writing on it (branded goods). I can see your concern. But do not think they would sell fake. I buy lots of branded goods from there and have not had a problem. Might be a bad batch

I bought some mini candy canes from there with a warning re an additive.After checking it seems it is banned in Europe.

It's called "Grey Market" stock. Colgate will want to sell direct to them in the UK but a third party supplier will have access to cheaper foreign products.

Because currencies and costs differ in different geographies, products will be able to be sourced more cheaply (even with transport costs).

So, it's not illegal ("Black market") but the products may not be what's advertised in uk ("White Market"). Poundland are responsible for not selling anything illegal from their stores so it should conform to UK legislation. Pound land are big enough to care bout this so I'd be fairly confident using the product. Worst case scenario should be that if Colgate had a whizz bang new formula, it mightn't be the one you buy in Poundland...

But that's Poundland. Lots of the pound shops have slightly different names - are they to be trusted? Not sure - hope so.

Many of the grey market branded goods have Arabic writing/ingredients, produced by the big brands for export to other countries.

Different markets have different recipes - it's probably the right recipe for Thailand. Once had a KFC in Dubai, 'twas horrid, nothing like the 11 herbs and spices we have in England, manager of shop was English and he agreed not the same recipe as we have at home ....

No I don't think you are being paranoid. I also bought Colgate toothpaste from poundland and both my mother and I agreed it tasted completely different! Nothing like toothpaste at all.

I haven't used it since.
