To think Cathy Glass is out of order?

She is a famous author for writing about children she has been a foster Carer to. So she is making money from disclosing the stories of these children. It feels so inappropriate .

I know she name changes but it just seems morally wrong and another case of the children being exploited. They should be allowed to publish their own stories and make money for themselves from it.

Or possibly I'm being over judgemental.

No way - I agree YANBU.

I'm a Nurse and I could write some shocking books make loads of money but I'd be struck off. And to be honest I wouldn't dream of doing it.

Then again OP, maybe she's doing it to try and help other foster carers? Either way, I'm sure I'd feel pretty betrayed if I'd been in her care.

To be honest I'm not too keen on her books. But then I do REALLY like Torey Hayden, and hers are of a similar nature so I guess I'm inconsistent!

Does she get informed consent? Fine if she does, not if she doesn't.

OP - I would feel real uncomfortable if it was my family that was being written about. She may name change but I am sure the stories are very unique and I would be concerned that I would be recognisable.

As a foster Carer I hate her books. All those calm and reasoned conversations in vocabulary a child wouldn't grasp, her own perfect children and the fucking ridiculous happy endings. I wish she would stop. None of it bears any relation to reality, they are works of pure fiction with an utterly perfect and smug Carer as the star. All the talk and miraculous behaviour changes are just bullshit.

Torey Hayden does this as well, merges peoples stories and creates new "characters" from a blend of anecdotes about different people. I find it all a bit snore. tbh.

That woman has my maiden name, the name I was known as back at home all my life - my poor mum was so embarrassed when she saw that first book in the local shop, had to go around explaining to people that no, her daughter hadn't written a misery memoir... :o

I've only read one of her books (mil and I share a kindle account)

I was cringing at how often she felt the need to reiterate how good she was, and a specialist, and detailing all the amazing thank yous she recieved which was just essentially gushing about her amazingness...

I actually like her books.Its made me see what a really hard job it is looking after these children and how challenging it is when each case is different to the next.I prefer not to think shes doing it for any bad reason.I think she may like writing and its what she knows about and its given me an even greater respect for foster carers and a reality check of what some children go through.

Fwiw, I think one or both of them are likely to be sued at some stage. Not sure that the person suing would win though, if the stories are all basically a mish mash.

I think YANBU. I also think CG presents what is probably a very unrealistic view of foster caring (though I am not a foster carer so what do I know?) The strong implication in her books is that if you can buy plenty of stuff, redecorate frequently and are really good at cleaning, that's foster caring sorted. I'd imagine that there's more to it than that.

I've read them all and find her so smug it's unbearable. She talks about her lovely big house all the time and is really snide about her ex husband on a regular basis. Would love to know her real name

I'm a (soon to be ex, sadly) foster carer. It is so unrealistic. However hard we try, many, many children have been given such a shit start that they won't have those happy endings descrbed. Drastic improvements, yes.. They won't have those miraculous changes and fixes, and we have to help them the best we can and that is the most we can ever do. And your biological children won't ever be perfect angels ever. It can be so infuriating!

I like the Torey ones, the only cathy glass one I like is the one with the little african boy whos dad finally finds him. Yes a bit unrealistic but I don't read it believing everything it is just a story with a happy ending.

Presumably she is not called Cathy Glass herself.
