To wonder why it's so hard to find out how much data snapchat uses!

My young adult DD has a smartphone and has been going over her 1GB/month tariff allowance the past few months. She denies any knowledge of doing anything differently, but isn't exactly giving the matter her full attention, so I'm the one thinking about it! She doesn't download films, she's cut back on Spotify, so the only thing I can think of now is snapchat. And can I find out how much data a snapchat transmission uses to send/ receive? Can I buggery. The phone provider seemed to be struggling to understand my query just before the signal failed and I gave up, will try again; snapchat website and googling it just say 'it uses data from your package and if you exceed it you'll be charged'. Yeah, but how much data?! Why the reluctance to tell us, guys? I'm starting to feel like it's a conspiracy between snapchat and the phone companies!
Has anyone else had a similar thought?

Well it would depend how much much she is using it. How many photos she's uploading, how many she is downloading (photos viewed are downloaded data)

She must be using it quite a lot to go over the data. Does she use it at home or out and about? Have you got wi fi?

I would imagine the amount of data used would depend on what's sent, eg photo, video, sound etc?

Thus no definitive answer as to what snap chat uses itself.

Also it's up to your service provider to breakdown your usage and what's costing the most

This may be of use to you, doesn't give specifics but I interesting none the less www.snapchat.com/static_files/parents.pdf

Well, I glimpsed '30kB per pic' on one of the websites that I couldn't explore further because they wanted permission to share my details in exchange for letting me past their front door - no way. If that's true then snapchat can't be the cause because she'd need to be sending 1000 pics per day while out & about on 3G, every day, to use the 1gig/month! But pictures are usually more like 100+ kB aren't they, at Internet quality..,.

strump, I'll call the provider again tomorrow - but they really did seem to be having great difficulty understanding my request. .

Snapchat are low quality photos though, but bear in mind they can also send videos too

Be firm with them, tell them if it's going over the 1gb you want a break down of where the data is going. Good luck!

Does she use Youtube? Videos or podcasts would be my guess... What smartphone does she use - my Android lets me breakdown data usage by app.

Although 1Gb a month only gives you about 35Mb a day to use - that goes quickly on a few Spotify songs, some image-heavy web pages (especially with .gifs - does she use Tumblr?), etc.
