Where did you get your mirena taken out?

I'm due to have my coil out tonight (I hope) and have opted to have it out at sexual Heath drop-in clinic. I'm really nervous that it'll be full of teenagers in the waiting room and I'll look like a dork (I'm nearly 30!). Where did everyone else have it out, oh, and did it hurt?

If by sexual health clinic you mean somewhere that specialises in sexual health and contraception then you have made an excellent, excellent decision.

I had one swapped at the GP's where they don't do that many - big mistake. Huge. You want someone who is doing this every single day.

Also my GP isn't licensed for the local aneasthetic. If they offer you that, take it Wink

Hi Wilson, thanks for your reply. Sorry your experience wasnt great. Yes, it's a sexual health clinic with nurses that use all the swabs and bits and bats and spend their days looking up fanjo's. Yikes! Does it hurt?

Family Planning clinic - I honestly did not feel it coming out.

annabanana84 · 29/10/2013 15:06

Thanks iggymama, this is what this place is. Says they do STD testing and family planning dealing in coils, implants etc.

Had mine swapped and one taken out (I'm on my 3rd) at the GP. It wasn't painful and was done pretty quickly. Sure you'll be fine at a sexual health clinic.

phantomhairpuller · 29/10/2013 15:07

I did it myself Blush

Don't try it though- was a complete mistake, I could feel the strings a lot lower than usual so I gave them a little tug and hey presto Confused

No damage done and I barely felt it coming out. But I got a huge dressing down from GP when I went in for a check up Blush

mummytowillow · 29/10/2013 15:39

In hospital by hysteroscopy as it had gone missing Sad

It was awful and very painful, but only for minutes!

annabanana84 · 29/10/2013 15:52

Thanks so much for your replies. Will I e able to have it out tonight or will this first appointment just be a consultation?

At the GP. Barely felt a thing to be honest. I wouldn't of had another one put in if it was even remotely bad because I am an absolute wimp...

ishouldbecleaning · 29/10/2013 15:56

Let me know if it hurts.... (Planning to TTC next Spring)

I had put it done by my GP, she does it regularly (apparently) and I can honestly say the pain was fucking unbearable.

However it was totes worth the 2 hours of contractions it caused my womb to have and the 4-5 days of discomfort. Had no other problems. Best contraception ever.

Peacocklady · 29/10/2013 16:02

Drop in clinic. You won't feel old at all! And they do loads of coils. Where I'm from they had a different floor for under 18s I think it was.

Peacocklady · 29/10/2013 16:04

I think they can take it out there and then unless like me the strings have gone up in which case you need another appt.

MammaTJ · 29/10/2013 16:06

I had mine out in the doctors. There is one person who does all of them in my surgery, so she does them often.

brainwashed · 29/10/2013 16:08

Mine fell out....

annabanana84 · 29/10/2013 16:16

Well, hope you'll all be thinking of me at 4:30pm! Ha ha, I'm such a chicken!

I had the copper coil and had it taken out at family planning clinic. I think it's definitely best to go there as opposed to GPs as they have more experience of it.

Mine got a bit stuck so it was a tiny but uncomfortable getting it out but nothing major - and I'm 6 months pregnant now so alls well it would appear. Good luck with it!

Mumofalittlegirl · 29/10/2013 16:30

A&E

It had given me a crippling womb infection
Not sure if removal hurt as my stomach felt like it was going to explode at the time

WeileWeileWaile · 29/10/2013 16:36

GUM clinic - locally they do contraception too & the doctor takes out 4/5 a day

yourlittlesecret · 29/10/2013 16:40

GP took 10 seconds.
You shouldn't ask about mirena on here as all the horror stories come out.

WilsonFrickett · 29/10/2013 16:53

It was a bit nippy but fine. Hot water bottle and 2 paracetomal did the job. Hope yours went OK, just saw your appt time Cake

annabanana84 · 29/10/2013 21:06

Wow, was so painless, maybe a tiny bit uncomfortable as the 'ice cream cone' looking apparatus went up my fanjo, but in 2 seconds the lovely lady who did it, was dangling in front of me. And the lady was absolutely lovely! I wanted to hug her when she'd done it!

WilsonFrickett · 29/10/2013 23:04
