DH is just back from hospital after having gastric surgery and is on soluble pain killers.

He isn't mobile so I was thinking about dissolving his meds ahead of time so they are ready when he needs them - I am here looking after him but was thinking for during the night.

I was just wondering if they would lose efficacy if they weren't taken straight away.

It probably depends on the medication but the contents would settle - you could solve that by leaving a spoon in the glass to give it a stir up before he takes them?

I don't think it has to be effervescent in order to work but I'm not sure!

I think the actual medicine tends to sink to the bottom but I'm not sure.

I wouldn't just incase unless the packet said it was ok to make up In Advance

I used to make up co-codamol and forget to drink it. If you don't stir it you get it all in one foul mouthful at the end! Other than that it still worked the same.

thanks for the replies!

should have mentioned that he is on paracetamol and tramadol and has to wait for them to stop fizzing before taking them.

That should be fine then!

AmandinePoulain · 25/10/2013 20:44

I would worry about someone else coming along and drinking it thinking it was just water - have you got any dcs?

ManifestingMingeWhispersAlone · 25/10/2013 20:47

wouldn't you just leave a glass of water handy so he can dissolve them when he is ready?

BombayBadonkadonks · 25/10/2013 20:48

A very good point - would be in a water bottle, sealed and on the bedside. DCs are well trained and they wouldn't even see it.

It takes a while for the fizzing to subside so he can take them.

I thought that premixing them would be easier/quicker at night.

Why can't you have a glass of water and the Packet of drugs close to the bed and he can pop them in him self when needed.

QueenofKelsingra · 25/10/2013 21:38

i'm with amandine - with DC in the house I wouldn't take the risk of leaving medications anywhere they may access - all should be locked away/high up out of reach. not worth the risk IMO for a few minutes to get them when required.
