Because we need more capacity in electricity generation, or we will end up entirely dependent on importing it from other countries, and saying whatever they want.

The £92.50 strike price is a lot cheaper than the current £135/megawatt hour guaranteed for windfarms.

something do you live in the area? Lots of locals are up in arms at the enormous pylons that will be trawled across areas of outstanding natural beauty, not to mention all the other downsides to the plan.

er....Somerset is not a known earthquake zone. Fukushima totally irrelevant. Ask the Germans as their lights go out because of the greenies who don't know any geography.

you can have windfarms that do not work, cost a fortune in subsidies and still do not work, and need backup from reliable sources that DO work. They are horrific to live near for all sorts of reasons.
you can have coal and oil. Except you can't because the EU says no. And of course there is a carbon and running out issue.
you can have tidal. Good idea but not subsidised and too expensive.
you can have solar. Works to a point but not well enough at UK latitude.
you can have nuclear. (not noo-cue-lear, as repeatedly pronounced by stupid people on tv). Yes, there is a radioactive waste issue and a risk, but it can be handled. I would live near one of these.
you can have biomass. Stupid idea on an industrial scale.

or you can be in the dark with no internet.

your choice. I choose nuclear, coal and oil.

I'm for it. The fact is that we need to get electricity from somewhere, and this is the best option.

It might be ugly, but it's a price worth paying IMO.

I'd rather be near a nuclear plant than a coal one.

This is the future! We need it in the UK, we really do.

And it will guarantee a lot of jobs for the area, and the UK can get back to being a main player in the nuclear world again, we really need our scientists/engineers to be global specialists, this is perfect, everyone needs new energy sources.

1 x Nuclear power station = 7% of the national power requirement.

We need another 13 asap. I don't want to be dependent on gas controlled by Putin, or his proxies.

And we, the taxpayer, the government, should be building and funding them as an absolute national priority. Not the French and Chinese.

Oh and to anyone that complains of us subsidising it, I'm pretty sure it's agains EU law for the government of one country to subsidise a company from another. Or something like that. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

And another thing. If cancer rates are higher near nuclear power stations, why aren't the employees dropping like flies?

EDF is a state owned company, just not our state. I bet they manage to give EDF advantages that our government couldn't (ie sold to its mates on the cheap like the Royal Mail) and so now we have no foothold in a global industry that we were once masters of.

we need energy. MN claims to be full of renewable fans but in the real world almost everyone is NIMBY about every form of energy generation. (Not me, I am campaigning for a gas-fired electricity station in our town, perfect site for it & all already available, but can I find support? Pah!)

Most people are so very NIMBY. It's only worth the big battle guaranteed to face any energy generation scheme, for something that has tremendous potential to generate loads of low carbon energy. Even if the sources of fissile materials are all dodgy places (ie, the Russians).

so folk have brought this on themselves. They don't like onshore wind or gas-fired or coal-fired or incinerators. So this is what's left. Enjoy!

I also live near a nuclear power station (If you cut down a few trees you would be able to see it from my DC school.) and I have no concerns about it. We need nuclear energy - it is clean and reliable, and really very very safe.

I wonder how the British government would feel if Ireland plonked a nuclear reactor on their doorstep!

I think it's great. Our existing power station are (at least in part) on their last legs and operating after the date they were due to be decommissioned. We have a choice to either build more of the same, or switch to a more efficient and less globally warming power source. We need at least another 10 to be commissioned asap.
