To wonder how people use Facebook whilst at work?

I know several people that do. Two with quite high profile jobs. Another with a very part time job ( 2 four hour days)

How do they get away with it? Sometimes DH doesn't even have time for lunch.

Maybe some people just work more efficiently than others.

Crinkle77 · 07/10/2013 18:44

During breaks and lunch. Just because your husband does not have time for lunch doesn't mean other people don't.

Souredstones · 07/10/2013 18:44

Sneaky look at the phone between jobs, break times lunch times

IcedTeaOneSugar · 07/10/2013 18:45

Not sure why it's a problem.

Lunchtime? Waiting for the kettle to boil?

My workplace doesn't begrudge a few minutes here and there as long as the work gets done.

The more senior the less you're monitored anyway.

BrokenSunglasses · 07/10/2013 18:51

The people I know I with high profile jobs do a lot more personal stuff while they are at work than those of us with low paid or mediocre jobs. One high profile job friend that I asked said that its because she doesn't have a clock off time from work, she goes home when she's finished so its up to her if she wants to leave at 6 having worked like a trooper or go home at 8 after looking at Facebook and sending a few personal emails and making some personal phonecalls. As there's a culture of staying late in her job, she is better off doing personal stuff while she's at work because it would look bad if she always went home earlier than everyone else.

I work in retail so don't have my phone on me when I'm on the shop floor, but when I have my breaks and lunch I check my Facebook and mumsnet on my phone.

My dp is a chef so has his phone in his pocket so in quiet moments can check his Facebook on his phone.

Think it completely depends on the nature of the job tbh.

dingit · 07/10/2013 19:05

But on it nearly all day, or when you only work 4 hours? Hmmm.

I look like I'm on Facebook all day as I tend to open it on my computer when I get to work, and then just have a mindless few minutes of it every now and then to clear my head a bit - kind of the social media equivalent of a fag break. But then, my computer use isn't monitored and neither are my hours - it is different for junior staff where I work.

PresidentServalan · 07/10/2013 19:26

I work long hours, often without lunch hours but I always have my phone on me - I usually do it on the loo or while I am making a pot of coffee.

whois · 07/10/2013 19:30

While waiting for a huge document to print. While waiting for a massive excel model to save or calculate. While getting a drink from the coffee machine. While just taking a few mins break.

My hours aren't monitored, I just have to get my work done.

Bunbaker · 07/10/2013 19:31

"Maybe some people just work more efficiently than others."

I am sceptical about that. I am far too busy at work to look at Facebook except at lunchtime. Some skivers at work Facebook on their phones during the day, but they get hauled over the coals for that if caught. Work is for working not chatting to your mates.

In fact so many people have abused access to social networking sites on their PCs that we can only look at them during the lunchtime period as the IT department block it during the rest of the day

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 07/10/2013 19:34

Are you talking about someone in particular? That's quite specific.

Bunbaker · 07/10/2013 19:36

Was that question for me? I wasn't talking about anyone specific, no.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 07/10/2013 19:40

I'm always logged on as I don't sign out on my phone.

Then again my DH has my password to send himself things and so does my mum and dad for the same reason.

ilovebabytv · 07/10/2013 20:07

I log im on fb at work and check it up when i have a quiet moment. I work in quite a relaxed, very quiet office so if theres not much doing then fb/google passes the time quite well. Nothing to do with being inefficient. Everything that needs done is done and then some.

flipchart · 07/10/2013 20:11

It depends on your job.
Sometimes I have a lot of waiting around to do and all the reports are done, everything is laid out and we are just waiting for someone to arrive then we can start the next part of the job. Sometimes there is no rest but other times we can be waiting 1/2 and hour for the bus to arrive.
While the other staff have nipped outside to have a fag I may go on FB.

I just use small windows of opportunity if I want to go on.

beaker25 · 07/10/2013 20:37

I use Facebook a lot for work so I have it open pretty much all day. Most of the time I using the work profile but I look at my own occasionally too. Probably looks like I'm using it constantly, but I'm still working most of the time.

Also, same as flipchart I sometimes get periods of time when I'm waiting for something to happen, so use it or other sites then. I get my job done, so my work don't seem to mind.

tanfastic · 07/10/2013 20:41

I use it in my lunch hour and I might look at it once or twice a day on my phone which literally takes a couple of minutes. I work very hard so my boss doesn't begrudge it as long as the work gets done he's happy.

GirlWithTheDirtyShirt · 07/10/2013 20:42

I check mine at work 3 or 4 times a day. And Twitter.

I do it when I'm getting a drink, when I'm popping to the loo, when I need a two minute break or when a conference call is particularly dull.

I used to work with a bunch of jobsworths who questioned every time I opened it at work. They never noted that they each spent upwards of an hour a day on the phone to their husbands/teenage children. Apparently that was different.

LaFataTurchina · 07/10/2013 20:52

Depends what your job is also -
When my 'job' was studying I faffed about on facebook/the guardian online etc. all the time Grin (except in the British Library, that is just cheeky when you are using up space in a reading room)

I've also used it seriously - i.e. organising events/meetings via facebook groups.

Nowadays my phone is kept locked in my locker while I'm working.

livinginwonderland · 07/10/2013 20:56

I go on on my breaks, before/after my shifts and on the toilet. I work retail so can't use my phone at other times.

ChrisTheSheep · 07/10/2013 21:24

My current job actually involves posting Facebook updates! They're on my employer's page, of course: I don't look at my personal page during this time. In a previous life, it was lunch-break facebooking all the way.

pointythings · 07/10/2013 21:27

Ours is blocked, so we don't. I FB at home. In our office, the Times quick crossword is our downfall, though we do it collectively and it only takes about 15 minutes. Our manager joins in, we get it done, we all get our heads down again, refreshed and ready for more work.
