To think this was extreme and unnecessary?

Travelling on the train back from London late at night. (maybe10ish)

A few rows down from me an old man (at least 70) had dropped off to sleep. The ticket lady came to check our tickets.
She stood next to the man and said clearly "excuse me, Sir"
No response.
So she said it louder ( a LOT louder)
No response.
So she screamed it at him. I mean, full on screaming. Everyone in the carriage jumped out of their skins and craned around to stare (it sounded like she was being attacked) A baby started crying etc etc.

The poor bloke looked terrified and humbly handed over his tickets once he had established that was why he was being screamed at.

Now I know she had a job to do and the cant touch passengers but AIBU to think this was a bit harsh?

Very rude . Unless it was my dad as he is a horrible old bugger that deserves a shout .Grin

YANBU.

What a nasty to treat someone - especially an elderly gentleman!!

She should have left him to sleep.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 04/10/2013 18:05

That's horrible. I would have said something

Yes please complain, utterly disgusting.

ilovesooty · 04/10/2013 18:19

It does sound extreme but she had tried to wake him up twice and she needed to check his ticket. I'm at a bit of a loss to see what else she could have done really.

pixiepotter · 04/10/2013 18:21

YANBU
why is she not allowed to touch customers? surely she could have tapped him onthe shoulder?

CajaDeLaMemoria · 04/10/2013 18:23

No you can't tap customers. Touching them can lead to dismissal.

Pretending to be asleep is the most popular way to get out if needing a ticket, too.

Screaming at him was really, really unnecessary though. I'd be petrified to be woken up by a scream.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/10/2013 18:28

Could she have asked another passenger to give him a nudge?

What if she was doing a First Aid style response to stimulus?
I'm sure she'd have First Aid Training.
If he's not responding after two verbal tries, then the next stage (in First Aid) would be a gentle/firm shoulder shake.
That wouldn't be classed as touching.

But she sounds like a cow.
