To be worried about my dd sleeping too much

Doubtfuldaphne · 03/10/2013 21:21

My dd is 2 yrs 8 months and her sleep pattern is really worrying me
She nearly always comes in to our bed at night but doesn't stay awake and we don't mind. She would usually go to sleep at 9 and wake up at 7-8am
Lately she has been falling asleep at about 4pm and sleeping right through to the morning. So she's not getting a dinner and last night she woke up wide awake at 10 and talking away in a very animated way - not her usual self..She's acting very excitable and extra naughty almost over the top for whats normal for her
Her diet is very healthy and varied so it can't be to do with that..she has recently started a playgroup but only for three hours a week, which he loves. Apart from that there haven't been any changes.
I'm wondering if there's something wrong with her and I'm worrying now!

So she's sleeping 4pm-8am. 16 hours?

I think that sounds loads. I 'd take her to gp / paediatrician (depending on where you are) just in case

I assume she doesn't nap in the day? If there's nothing wrong could you maybe reintroduce a nap so she's sleeping a more 'normal' night

I think I will phone the gp in the morning just to get her checked..
I try to get her to nap in the day but she has none of it even if she's tired!

It's odd that its just started to happen. If it helps my DD is similar ae, few months younger. Fri/sat/ sun she sleeps from 7.30 pm through until 8.30/9 am and still naps for 2-2.5 hours at lunchtime. So thats 15 plus hours. The rest of the weeks it's more like 7-7 and an hour nap as she's at nursery. I'm not worried because she's been like this for over a year really, I think she just likes her kip, like me!! I guess with your DD she's missing a meal and its all in one block, think I'd get her checked out too.

Don't panic! Kids sleep is really weird. She may be going through a growth spurt, which would easily mean a couple of extra hours in 24.

If you add to that that she sometimes wakes up for a few minutes at 10pm...maybe she's just not sleeping soundly, so the quality of sleep isn't the best? Ds2 sometimes wakes at 11/11.30pm and comes into our bed (he's 3). He's awake for no more that a couple of minutes, but whenever this happens he always sleeps later in the morning and I have to shake him awake at 8am rather than him waking a bit before 7 naturally.

By all means take her to get checked out but it's nothing to get overly concerned about.

I'm no expert, but that does sound a long time.

The DD's just settled down once they started nursery routinely at 3, but even before that they'd be up until 8 odd in the evening and awake at 8/8.30 in the morning, with a half hour nap in the afternoon.

What happens if you try to wake her up? Or get her up earlier?

It won't harm to go to the drs, as well as putting your mind at rest.

PieceOfTheMoon · 03/10/2013 23:02

It's probably just a growth spurt, which would explain the behaviour too, but I would still get her checked out at the GP to be on the safe side.

Doubtfuldaphne · 03/10/2013 23:09

I hope it is just a growth spurt but after thinking about this a lot tonight it's been going on for about three months now.
I can't wait until the doctors open tomorrow - I'm such a worrier!

Hi OP, did you see the GP? Hope your DD is ok.
