To take the fishy shoes back for a refund?

Bought some new canvas shoes a few weeks back. Not cheap - about £30. Wore them once for about an hour and then the next day broke my foot. Wore the right shoe once or twice more.

The thing is they smell sort of "fishy" as soon as you take it off - quite pungent and off putting - you would be embarrassed to take them off at a friends house IYSWIM.

I checked the "only worn once" left shoe - and it too smells fishy. I have popped both in the washing machine. Still fishy.

WIBU to take them back to the shop and ask for a refund or credit note.. I really do not want to wear a pair of shoes that make my sock, the air and my foot smell so awful

I have found lots of products have had a similar smell recently. Mainly clothes. It must be a protective chemical I guess?

I trytaking them back, but be prepared for an exhausting time. I'll bet as you washed them, the shop will try it on.

Good luck :)

It's probably the glue that holds the insoles in, heating up and releasing odour. (Remember Copydex glue at school?) YWNBU to take them back, but do so as soon as possible - returning shoes can be a bitch if they have much visible wear on them, even when they are defective!

When I used to work for M&S (going back a couple of years now!) they had exactly the same problem (fishy smell with shoes and belts I think it was!) and it resulted in a product recall. I would definitely return them asap.

Best to have taken them back before putting in the washing machine!

gamerchick · 01/10/2013 12:41

If you've washed them I doubt that you'll get anywhere. Nothing to lose though.

We bought a huge rug a few years ago, it is now known as the "fish smelling rug". It must definitely be some kind of preservative/protection thing but yes it stinks.

Take them back, easier than taking a rug back Grin

i have a bag that had a fishy smell. had to empty it and turn it inside out and spray with perfume and let it 'marinade' in it for a week and its ok for now, but i thought it was odd-and started to question myself Grin

If they are still fishy after washing I would think that's even more of a reason to take them back. It's going to be obvious they have barely been worn. Good luck. Persistence pays...

GladbagsGold · 01/10/2013 14:09

I would take them back. DS wore some shoes for a few days, they hurt his feet, so I took them back. There was no quibble at all, I was very impressed.

FishfingersAreOK · 01/10/2013 14:18

Bearleigh - that is kind of what I thought too - I really like them (style-wise) so wanted to find a solution. It is very obvious they have barely been worn.

M&S had a bag that smelled fishy once. I remember reading the reviews on their page. It was hilarious.

I'd take them back. Where were they from?

QueenStromba · 01/10/2013 14:32

If you really want to keep them you could try filling a couple of socks with bicarbonate of soda and putting them in the shoes for a few days - if that doesn't get rid of the smell then nothing will.

steppemum · 01/10/2013 14:44

I bet if you take them back they will exchange them because loads of other people have already returned them with the same complaint

FishfingersAreOK · 04/10/2013 15:10

Well, I got a credit note. Which I am happy with and had told the shop I would be fine with ..can go towards some wellies of trainers for DC ...or the lush £150 handbag in there Grin.

Was a bit of faff to start with..they have sold loads with no returns etc etc. We then went to the display....which, although not as strong, smelled...fishy....

Quoted a few Sales of goods act bit and.credit note issued.
