To think my MIL is trying to tell me something

Its my 40th birthday today.

I opened my cards this morning to discover that MIL had sent me a with sympathy card in which she's written "so sorry to hear your bad news"

Is this some kind of joke or is she hoping I'll shuffle off soon? Is being 40 THAT BAD?

Grin It's either a joke (does it sound like your MiL's sense of humour?) or some poor friend of hers who has been bereaved/made redundant/diagnosed with cancer etc will have received a vastly inappropriate cheerful card.

olidusUrsus · 24/09/2013 13:38

Bitch. Send some "sorry for your loss" flowers to your FIL?

Grin
GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/09/2013 13:39

I think it's a joke but it's in poor taste. Or perhaps she bought two cards at the same time and has mixed them up. The grieving family is probably even more confused than you are!!

Happy Birthday!

DidoTheDodo · 24/09/2013 13:40

What a shit joke.

BaronessBomburst · 24/09/2013 13:40

Being 40 is no different from being 39. :)

It's meant as a joke but is neither funny nor original.

thefuturesnotourstosee · 24/09/2013 13:45

Not sure she's not really into jokes (take it from me Grin )

Hadnt through of some sadly bereaved family getting my birthday card. I bet that's what's happened. She can get a bit muddled. Oh dear. Sort of hope that's it at least its easily explained

We accidentally sent a "Happy Birthday 6 year Old" card to my niece for her engagement. Only realised it when we went to write DD's friend's Birthday card.

DeWe · 24/09/2013 14:20

We got a bunch of flowers after dd1 was born offering happy birthday on your 90th.

The lady who got the congratulations on your baby flowers sent a lovely letter saying how complimented she was that they thought she was young enough to have a baby. Grin

We even sent her a birthday card the next year.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2013 14:22

I think its funny

Just the sort of thing my lovely mil would have sent me - as she knew I wasn't exactly happy about turning 40

Lora1982 · 24/09/2013 14:27

Clearly a joke when I turned 30 my brother sent a 'sorry you're leaving us card' :-D sod

80sMum · 24/09/2013 14:29

My sister sent a similar card to me on my 40th. Wasn't a sympathy card but had photo of an extremely old, wrinkly, knarled old woman on the front and inside it said "commiserations on the loss of your youth". I didn't find it funny, as was quite upset at turning 40. It seems funnier now that I know that 40 is actually pretty young (I have moved on a good few years since then)!

Teapigging · 24/09/2013 14:36

Definitely a joke. She probably thinks it was hilarious, witty and original.

TinyTear · 24/09/2013 14:44

I would have thought it was a joke.

A friend once gave me a card saying "in dog years you'd be dead"

but my daughter got on her 1st birthday a card from a very old relative that looked like a sympathy card and said "birthday wishes" and looked like could be appreciated by someone on her 90th birthday, not the 1st
Smile

TinyTear · 24/09/2013 14:46

No, actually i think it was "Birthday Thoughts" it said...

I need to check at home, we kept it to laugh at...

TinyTear · 24/09/2013 14:46

And Happy Birthday OP, I turned 40 a few weeks ago...

thefuturesnotourstosee · 24/09/2013 17:50

She just phoned to shes very sorry but she sent me the wrong card and unfortunately my birthday card went to her friend whose sister recently died. Luckily they think its funny

ThisWayForCrazy · 24/09/2013 18:18

Lol my MIL would do this!

BaronessBomburst · 26/09/2013 11:58

Thank goodness they saw the funny side!

TimeAgainForWellies · 26/09/2013 12:03

Thank goodness! Although that is the sort of birthday card my DH likes to send to his friends, and makes me cringe!

Happy Birthday!

DidoTheDodo · 26/09/2013 12:10

Pleased that's sorted. and that everyone seems to have a sense of humour too.
