Theres only four of us going and it is a birthday thing (no meal, just drinks) but afer four back to back shifts I have woken exhausted.

I have a whole day at work today, and another tomorrow.

Feel bad letting people down but my god, I could sleep for a week!!

Just go for a short while.

MortifiedAdams · 21/09/2013 06:44

Sad I finish at four, after starting at 7.30, and worked til 11 last night. Did the same the two days prior.

Even just to go for a short while I have to get all dressed up and head out for seven when I really really want to be in my pjs and in bed straight after toddler dd goes to bed.

Sometimes you have to be selfish, if you need the sleep then sleep. Make sure you tell them in plenty of time and suggest an alternative at a later date. Be prepared for them to be hacked off though.

I think YABU. I hate it when people don't turn up when they sat they would. Once you have commited then you should go. Wouldn't be so bad if a larger group or just a standard night out but a small group for someone's birthday is particularly bad. I would be really upset if it was my birthday.

I can understand you being tired but think you have to go. I often feel like I can't be arsed, but once I'm out I have a good time. Just don't stay out too late or drink too much and you will be fine.

Ifancyashandy · 21/09/2013 07:11

I take it your friends are aware of your circumstances etc? I would be fine it you explained all the above to me. I'd be sad for you to miss a night out but if a mate did this to me on my birthday, I'd totally understand. On the proviso you called and explained!

JumpingJackSprat · 21/09/2013 07:12

yabu. you knew you were going to be tired so why didnt you say three or more days ago? if i were you id go along for a little bit. what if one or more of the others decide theyre too tired as well?

I think it would be a bit off to cancel

Can you sleep this afternoon

Have you a partner?
Could you snuggle up with toddler in bed with DVD and nap then get a shower to wake you up

CeliaLytton · 21/09/2013 07:29

YABU though I understand why, for a small birthday get together it is important to make the effort, even when it seems like a mountain to climb.

You obviously mean enough to her/him to be invited to a small gathering and it only takes one or two people to decide they are too tired for a celebration to become a disappointment.

OTOH if you decide not to go, if you are that close you will be forgiven.

Try to make the night count for your friend, if you possibly can.

Your responses, a coffee, and a blast of fresh air on the way to.work have motivated me to go Grin

It wont be a late one (11pm finish), so you are all right, IABU.

Way to go Mortified! It will probably be good for you to get out and let your hair down- to the extent that it makes up for a couple of hours missed sleep.

ladymariner · 21/09/2013 09:36

Hope you really enjoy yourself, I know if I were your friend I'd be touched that you'd made the effort to go x
