judging AND the Daily Mail

So every day I treat myself to a half hour lunch and whilst munching I read the Daily Mail showbiz/gossip thing because a) I love the gossip and b) I love even more the comments by DM punters.

Over the time I've been doing this it's become apparent that DM readers particularly hate, with a total loathing, Victoria Beckham and Kate Middleton/Duchess of Cambridge. The things that really seem to wind them are up: VB because she doesn't smile and KM because she has long flicky hair.

Is it because DM readers would like to be married to Prince William or David Beckham themselves do you think? It's all I can think of. And it seems really unreasonable. Or am I missing something?

DM readers like to hate people who are their social "betters" and their social "inferiors". It helps them feel better to be able to forget about their essential averageness and timidity. They particularly reserve their strongest venom for people who for whatever reason break through class barriers (in either direction.)

So VB and Kate both fall into this category, VB as she used to be queen chav but has turned herself into a member of the upper class and Kate for marrying a prince.

Incidentally it works the other way, too. The DM's worst bile is reserved for people with middle class upbringings (with house price value attached), who have moved down in life, on purpose or otherwise. See Swampy. Or that posh bint who married Professor Green. Or any wealthy junkie or alcoholic.

They do not like people with tattoos.... I got some horrible comments when I was on the DM online.
quesadilla has it right I think.
Millie Makintosh (MIC) gets some horrible comments! I think her and Pro Green are really suited (he's actually a pretty nice guy). But of course he has tattoos and came from a poorer background so he's obviously not good enough for her!

Actually I find the DM to be sickly in its obsequious coverage of the Middletons in general. I personally am certainly not keen on what I've seen of them.
But VB seems lovely, with a very happy family.
