To think "Radio Addicts" should be renamed "Archers Addiicts"

There appears to be nothing else more worthy of our ears across the smorgasbord that is UK radio than the everyday story of country folk.

Must be SOMETHING else worth listening to on the radio, no?

Mark Kermode. That is all.

meriambeetle · 12/09/2013 03:43

Radcliffe and Maconie.
But I love The Archers too.

I don't live in the UK but get a live stream of Radio 4 and I LOVE it. You should try some international radio stations and hear what they do. Pretty useless. Radio 4 news, plays, reviews, weird interviews, random stuff from other countries. Excellent stuff. And of course the Archers. Didn't that get racy a while while ago with an affair or something?!

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/09/2013 05:16

I have the live stream of R4 on in the house. Canadian DH came in one day and said, "What is THAT? Is it about ships?" It was the shipping forecast. What a cultural chasm trying to explain why I listen to that.

bobbywash · 12/09/2013 08:19

Love Radio, don't listen to the Archers. Hence YABVU

ButThereAgain · 12/09/2013 08:33

I think the BBC recently closed down its Archers chat forums, and I wonder whether Mumsnet has had a wave of refugees from there. There has always been an amount of Archerchat here but it seems to have increased. Perhaps the Radio Addicts topic is just the start of it and they will move to take over all of the topics one by one. Breast v. bottle will start to be all about hand-rearing calves and lambs; the Politics topic will be about Ambridge Parish Council, the Pets forum will get a Llama sub-topic, etc.

What's wrong with being into The Archers????????

I looooove Radio 4, I love listening to exotic foreign radio stations when cooking, and I love Danish radio DR1 to get me to sleep. Radio is brilliant!

AquaticNocturne · 12/09/2013 10:41

I didn't know such a thing existed on Mumsnet. I love the Archers and am off there now, the likelihood of getting much more useful work done this morning has vanished!

I wouldn't survive the day without radio 4 and the archers means that I am doing the dishes after dinner and my dcs are snuggled on the couch with their dad having their bedtime stories. bliss

I know what the OP is trying to say though. I listen to a lot of radio, mostly radio 4/5, and was a bit disappointed to see that the radio topic was mostly Archers, only because I wanted to see if anyone had opinions on anything I'd been listening to.

I used to read the Archers mb on the BBC, and the pretty horrible Points of View board, just for discussions on what I'd seen.

I'm not sure what I'd start my own thread on though Confused

Lots of other things on R4 that I like -
Crossing continents
From our own correspondent
The afternoon plays
Fags, mags and bags
Thinking allowed
Woman's hour

Thatballwasin · 15/09/2013 01:44

I love Any Answers but the time (Sat afternoon) doesn't suit me and I never get round to listening to the podcast - if there is one. I used to be a massive archers fan but went off it when Nigel fell off the roof (David needed to act completely out of character for that sequence of events and that's one thing I thought I could rely in the Archers not to do). It still makes me smole though when i remember how much my farmer father loathed it, he would yell for someone to turn off the radio the second the news ended and the music started.

Mayo and Kermode I completely agree with but I have a total aversion to R4 plays, always set in the 1920, '30s or 50s and always really dull and depressing. Anything presented by John Penar, in fact R5 has won me over from R4, very fond of Shelagh Fogarty and a little fond of Richard Bacon - I loved his 10pm show and thinking of it makes me feel all nostalgic about maternity leave.

Moral Maze is good too though - in fact why don't I just start my own thread rather than marvelling at all the Archers ones...

I like Frank Skinner's radio show but I don't know anyone else that listens to it. I hate the Archers, my parents listened to it and I always dreaded that theme music coming on. Especially the omnibus edition on sundays!
