to wonder where my DD learnt to say this?

"Shut up"

She is 22mo and keeps saying it to her baby doll when she pushes her round in the buggy.

Ive tried to encourage her to say "shhhh there there" or similar and clearly its a doll but I really dont like that she has learnt this expression.

I honestly dont know where its come from. Am I being PFB to not want "shut up" said to my child?

Perhaps she's overheard other people saying it to each other?

Neighbours maybe?

It might not have been said to her she has probably just overheard it somewhere. You need to steel yourself for what she is going to pick up in the future!!

I've often said Oh do shut up when next doors dogs have spent the day barking,so it was repeated by DC. Along with shit and Jesus Christ.

Hmmm...hope she has just heard it somewhere. It just isnt an expression we use at all. I think it is quite a nasty thing to say tbh so want her not to.

Its more the context - only said to baby in the buggy - makes.me think someone might have said it to her when she has been in her buggy.

She's 22months. IME kids of that age apply things often out of context. She could have heard an adult saying it to another adult,two children saying it to one another,a parent to child. What they play doesn't always mirror real life.

My smaller two used to play a game where the children went to work and the dogs had to feed the babies. This didn't happen in real life. Actually most of their games involved dogs being in charge and sometimes they were the dogs.

They are fine now.

I can remember just before my 3rd birthday being shocked when our neighbour told his son to,"Shut up." I must have been quite a little prig.

ynbu to dislike it, it just holds a nasty tone doesnt it.

theres not alot you can do and she will say worse, i would just ignore it, maybe a "shut up isnt nice, shh or be quite is kinder" but other than that dont make a big deal out of it.

other wise she will see it anoys you and do it just for that reason..... or is that just my children?

My DS had his twin dolls in their pram when he was 3. He walked past me whilst I was cooking and I asked blithely asked him "how're the babies?" Whilst not really taking my eye off the job at hand. He stopped, rolled his eyes and said in an exasperated tone "they're killing each other"!!

It was like listening to myself on the phone to my mother when she asks about my brood!!

Mine said to me "Go away you little pest!" which I have never said to her, I think she got it from pre-school, I just hope it was from one of the other children and not one of the staff...

My ds went through a phase of saying that too, I was mortified and hoped no one thought he'd heard it from us. He soon stopped and started saying go away instead .

Mine used to say "go away" at this age - from another boy at nursery. It got really annoying as he used to say it when I asked him to do something he didn't like. I tried gritting my teeth and thinking that at least he knew how to use it in context, but it was bloody annoying!

Mine is 26 months she doesn't say "shut up" but I heard her say "bite me" the other day...?

Is it normal for them to be cross with toys? I've heard DD in her room telling them all off!

It's very commonly used though isn't it, she could have heard it anywhere? You'll just have to tell her you don't want to hear it if that's how you feel, there will be other things too sooner or later. It's fine said some ways, a bit aggressive perhaps other ways.

I grew up in a house where it was used freely and not in an offensive way at all, just between us all, even though we weren't allowed to say bum, belly, fart or oh my God and it was only when I first ventured onto MN I realised that some people don't like it.

Dd is 3 and can be very rough with her dolls and she tells them off and puts them on time out. I put her on time out but I'm never rough. Maybe she has played with other children who have treated the dolls in that way. A lot of the time she is gentle and loving towards them.

I agree that their play doesn't always represent real life.

Our 19 month old has picked up 'arsehole bastards' not from myself of dh. She now whispers it at me ( only me ) and if I ask her what did you just say she replies baba and laughs .

I told her the other day I love you, she replied love you bastard!!

It's not funny and we've no idea where its came from, wonders if she's trying to tell me something and it's only ever said to me.

Shut up I would be ok with.

No they genuinely don't swear, they find it that funny that she does, the laughing definitely encourages but I know it didn't originate from them.

Reminds me of the eldest calling my sister a bitch. Its not a word we use in my family so no idea where it came from. Or my second and her love of proclaiming Fucking hell. Most notably when she was in my mums looking outside and remarked Its raining and there's my washing out. Fucking hell.
