To identify with Ursula over Ariel now I've grown up?

Ariel is a bit of a twit, frankly. She abandons her family for a boy she doesn't even know, throws away everything because nothing matters more than bagging a good looking man.

Ursula, on the other hand, kicks ass. She's fierce, stands on her own.. errr... eight tentacles and fights her way to the top (albeit briefly).

As a young girl, I adored Little Mermaid and wanted to be Ariel (that hair!) so much, but now I'm older I find her grossly irritating and side with Ursula instead.

YANBU - my 4yo opted to buy Ursula plush instead of Ariel plush at eh disney store. She's a better singer apparently Grin

Eilidhbelle · 27/08/2013 13:18

Ursula has a better song too. Yep, YANBU.

TheCraicDealer · 27/08/2013 13:23

I see what you're saying, but Ursula did enslave all those "poor, unfortunate souls", which isn't fabulous.

Apparently her appearance was modeled on Divine which is fabulous.

I was always more of a Beauty and The Beast girl, myself.

SarahAndFuck · 27/08/2013 13:28

I prefer Alice in Wonderland.

She didn't need a man of any description and her take on it all was "everybody else is crazy, I'm the only sane one here."

I totally get where she's coming from with that. Grin

Ha! For the true insipid wimpy girly, I give you...
Snow White!!!

She even loves cleaning and housework for goodness sake! And gets pole-axed by an apple!

"Love's First Kiss" indeed - she'd barely met him!

Beastofburden · 27/08/2013 22:12

Ursula every time, ariel is a pita

hardbeingme · 27/08/2013 22:19

the message that most disney films give is that its ok to marry the first man you meet, and the little mermaid's message is that go ahead, do what you want as someone else will deal with the consequences.

That said i remember when i came out in the cinema, my mum bought me a cheap version on video (olden days) and she died at the end, i was gutted; i'd never read the original hans christen andersen story before so was completely unprepared.

snow white (as well as being alarmingly high pitched and warbly) has no nose. it bothers me everytime.

noisytoys · 27/08/2013 22:23

It should be noted that Ariel was only 16.

And she was quite rebellious and brave in her own right.

Belle on the other hand I particularly love. Gave up her own freedom for her father, didn't want to get with the most handsome man in town to be his trophy wife, loved to read and want more from life, fell in love with a beast an didn't fall in love because he was the handsome prince.

I know Disney Princesses get slated on MN but they're really not that bad.

picnicbasketcase · 27/08/2013 22:45

I've not seen Little Mermaid in ages so I'm not sure re Ursula, but I did watch Labyrinth recently and felt so sorry for her stepmum. She only asked Sarah to babysit and she acts like a loopy spoiled brat. Strange how your perception changes.

MyBaby1day · 28/08/2013 04:25

I'm 'Team Ariel'! Grin

MissWimpyDimple · 28/08/2013 08:21

I'm a big fan of rapunzel. I love love love the sequence where she grapples with her conscience about leaving the tower Grin

JerseySpud · 28/08/2013 08:42

I like Rapunzel and Merida.

The princess i can't under stand, Sleeping Beauty. If ever there was a case for curiosity killed the cat...

pregnantpause · 28/08/2013 09:16

In Tue original (if there can be an original fairytale) the mermaid trades her voice for legs, but because she is going against nature every step she takes is painful. The prince does not know her, and as she cannot speak thinks her odd and married another. She goes to a cave by the sea, where her mermaid sisters offer her knives to kill herself, and taunt yet for her stupidity. She commits suicide, but once she is dead she is released from her unnatural torment and becomes the wind and the sea. Rather a better moral IMO- be true to yourself and don't do stupid things for a man, never give up your voice/identity.

Ursula is much more impressive in the Disney though. And it's not like the unfortunate souls didn't know what they were getting into is it? They reneged on the deal at the end of the day.

pregnantpause · 28/08/2013 09:23

The original, and taunt her. AutocorrectWink

FrenchRuby · 28/08/2013 10:22

YANBU. Love Ursula!
Fwiw, I've had the long bright red Ariel hair, it's a pain in the ass to keep up haha.
