Why do car boot sales start at such an ungodly hour?

It's the middle of the bloody night.

It's s bank holiday.

And I am up.

Weird.

Why not start at a civilised 11am?

Me too and who are these people that get here hours before it's meant to start?

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 26/08/2013 07:18

Antique dealers! They are ruthless.

I am up for school as its not even a bank holiday here in Scotland.

I did a boot fair last weekend. It was pretty grim tbh. The amount of people who would ask how much something was and then tut and roll their eyes as if it was expensive and then proceed to try and get 50, 30 or 10p off in quite a rude manner. (Someone arguing repeatedly that they wanted to pay 70p instead of the £1 I was asking for a new, unworn pair of toddler shoes for example) it made me a bit uncomfortable and I was much more likely to sell things more cheaply to people who asked in a friendly way. Some people were really quite aggressive.

On the plus side, our boot fair required us to get there at 7am, but we weren't allowed to get things out of the car until 8.30, so we had a lovely breakfast in Werherspoons while we waited. Smile

Have a good day!

is it not something to do with them being an additional weekend extra 'activity' so they're early thereby giving people the rest of the day to do whatever it is they normally do? I think that's how it started? otherwise, the car boots are competing with our leisure time and running around like a nutter doing all the things you needed to do in the week but couldn't find the time for time?

moustachio · 26/08/2013 09:59

Last time we did one there were people sorting through our stuff before we put it out. Mainly my brothers PC games that were worth quite a lot of money (really old ones). He got offered a fiver for about 10 of them and quickly googled them and realised how much they were worth! The guy really pressured him when he would accept his shit offer.

I agree about the earlyness, we drove past one yesterday at about 10am and didn't bother going in because it looked deserted!

Shlurpbop · 26/08/2013 10:02

I know people who get up at 2 am(yes, 2 am!) to be first in the queue to 'get the bargains'.
Hmm

Longdistance · 26/08/2013 10:07

I did a car boot last week, had to be there 4 6.30 to get a pitch.
It didn't start til 7.30, so they gave you time to set up. It was a waiting farce.
God knows who goes early for bargains. The best bargains are when packing up. I give up fighting to sell my stuff, and nearly give it away.

Mandy2003 · 26/08/2013 11:54

Its really annoying IMO. I want to start a business selling secondhand stuff on eBay and I know that boot sales would be a brilliant source of stock.

But I work from 9 till 11 at weekends, I don't drive, there's no bus to town on a Sunday and my Dad isn't ready to go out in the car until after 11.30 on a weekend. Grr!

Ilovewaleswhenitrains · 26/08/2013 12:47

There is a car boot sale in my area which starts at 2, it's the only one I go to.

AtYourCervix · 26/08/2013 13:34

I made £100 for my Sudan Fund so can't complain really.

We have a pile of stuff sorted in the garage ready for a car boot sale but haven't managed to get to one yet because they are all ridiculously early and at the weekend. Poor dh doesn't get home from work until the early hours, he really doesn't want to go to a car boot after only a couple of hours sleep, or alternatively look after ds while I go not that I want to go on my own I am a wimp.
Something during the week would be perfect, ds would be at school but I don't think such a thing exists, at least not around here.
