To make my kids wear helmets on their bikes?

As it seems quite rare with the kids near us.

Last summer a girl on our street fell off her bike and they thought she had fractured her jaw, she had concussion and wasn't wearing one.

A friends little boy just came off his bike and has a massive egg on his head.

I'm not perfect and I know they can still hurt themselves even with a helmet.

But am I unreasonable to make them wear a helmet or overprotective because that's how I'm made to feel.

I made mine wear them, although I have to confess that now most of them are teenagers, they wear them to get out of the garden, but if I pass them on the street they have taken them off and are swinging them from the handlebars! Sad I'm not sure what to do about it either, any suggestions welcome!

Everyone needs to wear a helmet when biking. My dad died after falling from his pushbike and sustaining a serious head injury Sad

I make mine wear one. He also wears one for going on his scooter; I've had some Hmm for that.

My thought is that I'd rather make him wear it so it becomes reflex (hopefully) and so I never wish I had made him if he did have a fall.

No, my dss went to school with two teenagers last year who were killed within weeks of each other being knocked from bikes :(

Sallyingforth · 24/08/2013 21:14

Are you serious?
You'd be bloody crazy not to!

DH once said to me: "imagine dropping a watermelon onto the road from head height..."

No idea how you can encourage teenagers - the Risk Assessment part of the brain just goes AWOL for about 6 years.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 24/08/2013 21:18

I think it should be law that every cyclist wears a helmet.
Did you see the news about the teenager who is in a coma because he didnt want to mess his hair up by wearing one.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 24/08/2013 21:20

hiddenhome so sorry about your dad

I make mine wear theirs and I lead by example. Doesn't make any sense seeing parents out with their kids making them wear helmets but not wearing one themselves

Elsiequadrille · 24/08/2013 21:21

It's the sensible option and yanbu.

Justforlaughs · 24/08/2013 21:32

Bradley Wiggins is fighting for a change in the law about this. Just saying!

My DH got hit off his bike by someone opening their car door and would have been seriously injured if he didn't wear a helmet. We always wear helmets when we go out as a family. DS2 who is 14 often cycles when he goes out and doesn't mind wearing his helmet. DD1 15 says he doesn't like cycling ie he won't wear a helmet when none of his friends do. - so tends to walk. This is a shame but they know we would be very annoyed if we saw them out with their helmets hanging on their handlebars.

mumthetaxidriver · 24/08/2013 21:46

DS1 not DD1

RedlipsAndSlippers · 24/08/2013 22:16

I've never worn a helmet on a bike, but I will now, since a friend of mine came off her bike coming down a hill and fractured her skull, arm, ribs and shattered her shoulder blade. She's healing up ok now, but she nearly died :(

Lweji · 24/08/2013 22:26

YANBU, I got a helmet myself.

TheSydenhamSet · 24/08/2013 22:33

My 3yo dd wears a helmet riding her scooter. Recently she was going at speed, clipped a wall and came crashing down on to the back of her head. I have no doubt if she wasn't wearing a helmet it would have meant a hospital visit. So, so thankful for that helmet. Shudder to think how injured she could have been. Yanbu

Mrschocolate · 24/08/2013 22:36

My uncle died of head injuries falling off his bike without his helmet on. The doctors believed that the injuries would of been minor if he had just worn his helmet.
