HMRC insulting my intelligence (semi-lighthearted)

So at the beginning of last month, I sent my p60 away to them as I had overpaid 400 pounds in tax. I used the tracker to find out when I would be expecting a reply, as I wanted to put it towards my holiday in early August and it said the 29th July. 'Brilliant,' I thought, as I KNEW I was entitled to the money back as I was under the personal allowance, so there should have been no qualms.
But July 29th came and went, and no reply. It was only today that I received a fucking letter, saying,
'I have checked the amount of tax you paid in the tax year ending 5 April 2013. I have worked out that you paid too much tax and I will send you a tax calculation shortly.'

Er, NO. I checked the amount of tax paid, and I worked out that I paid too much. I brought it to your attention, so don't act like you were combing through the system and happened to find out that I was due money and you are doing a favour by sending me my 400 pounds. 3 weeks from now, according to the letter. [Confused]

The fact that the money won't be coming in time for hols doesn't really matter, OH is paying for my half of the hols till the cheque comes in. It's just a teeny wee bit of a pisstake how they conduct themselves, especially if the coin was flipped and I owed them money.

Oh Mayo, slow to pay you, quick to demand you pay them.

HMRC are up there with BT and British Gas when it comes to violence-inducing communication.
That is extremely annoying!

goodbyeyellowbrickroad · 05/08/2013 16:44

They are incredibly frustrating! Took me 2 and a half months to get my rebate sorted.

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 05/08/2013 16:51

Haha - I've had that as well, fortunately it's never been time critical but I love their little 'ooh, look what I've found, aren't I amazing?' style letters despite the fact I did what you probably did and sent them a very neatly set out calculation showing exactly how much I paid, how much I SHOULD pay and therefore how much they owed me.

I got and spent my cheque weeks ago. I must be special.

Make sure they give you a refund, and don't just change your tax code so that you pay less tax each month. This happened to someone I know - was owed £300 and just had his tax code changed so that he paid £30 less tax per month for 10 months. He would have rather had the £300 in a lump sum!

mayoandchips · 05/08/2013 18:03

Mouserama Lump sum= gooooood Grin. Could it possibly have anything to do with the fact that the more money they have sitting in their little account at a time, the more interest they receive off of it? Shock

They sent me a letter asking me if I was sure I had 5 children not 4. I was sure.
