To think that Test Match Special is perfect background noise?

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 14:53

Just that. I am working at the dinner table and have TMS on my headphones: perfect.

A perfect burble of gentle noise and an oasis of calm,so much so that I resent the noise of a wicket falling.

I love the commentators (Geoffrey Boycott excepted)

Calm authoritative Jonathan Agnew.
Henry Blofeld who is like a fruity slightly batty great Uncle wittering on about buses and cakes. I especially like it when they pair him with Phil Tufnell in a chalk and cheese commentary team.
Vic Marks being all dry and self effacing.
Ed Smith the new boy and trying a bit too hard.

Best part of the summer as far as I am concerned.

Totally agree!! I've been counting down all week for cricket to start, sound of summer for me! Does make me crave cake quite often though...

DreamingofSummer · 01/08/2013 14:56

Just wonderful! - as is Jimmy Anderson's backside

MrsSparkles · 01/08/2013 14:57

Wholeheartedly agree. Its very relaxing especially on sunny days like this - hurray! I think I must be getting old as I've even started listening to Radio 4.

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 14:58

Me too on the cake ftont...although I'm on a diet so rice cakes are the only cakes I'll be getting.

I love it! I used to go to sleep listening to test matches being played on the other side of the world. Very restful.

Love Blowers!

Geoff Boycott is a cock though.

weblette · 01/08/2013 15:02

It's my summer soundtrack Smile

Seeline · 01/08/2013 15:02

Can't really have it as background noise - I get far too involved in all the discussions (unless it's Boycott of course). As for backsides, Stuart Broad's is by far the better I'm afraid even if I am old enough to be his mother Wink

I agree wholeheartedly...especially with the Tufnell/Blofeld combo...although I haven't been listening since lunch...better check the score!

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 15:06

Aus 157-3

Clark 50 no
Smith 2 no.

Also mrssparkles I've found myself listening to the unbelievable truth and the news quiz on radio four...radio one seems like a long time ago now...

Bowlersarm · 01/08/2013 15:08

Prefer it on the telly.

However, TMS is a lifesaver if I have to be in the car, or actually participate in RL for the five days

Floralnomad · 01/08/2013 15:08

I'm with hellon great to go to sleep with them wittering on when we are on an overseas tour in the middle of winter . I've got the cricket on in the background at the moment but that's on the TV and its Shane Warne wittering with Nassar at the moment . Love Bumble and Ian Botham .

nemno · 01/08/2013 15:10

I agree, it's bliss. Over the years I've even got used to old Geoff and love the way the others' handle him. I think when I heard how he mentored Bairstow after his dad's tragic death and the way he has apologised on air made me think he is not so bad.

Floralnomad · 01/08/2013 15:12

I don't mind Boycott ,sometimes he makes a lot of sense .

nemno · 01/08/2013 15:13

I have the radio on and when I hear something has happened I look at the SKY GO window on my open laptop, it is quite a few seconds behind TMS so gives me plenty of notice. I'd prefer it if I could sync TMS commentary with the TV pictures but this way is good too.

TalcAndTurnips · 01/08/2013 15:19

Blowers: Well it's a jolly fine day today here at Old Trafford. Absolutely charming young lady there talking a walk in front of the sight screen - The bowler just waiting for her to take her seat - oh, first class delivery from Broad there; lovely bit of swing there - this is rather a super cake sent in by Mrs June Bagwash from Leeds - what you think it is Aggers? Madeira? Genoa?

Boycott: Me Yorkshire Not in my day Me Me Yorkshire Yorkshire Yorkshire Me Yorkshire Me Me Me Don Bradman Me Yorkshire Yorkshire Young Folk Today Yorkshire Me...

swannylovesu · 01/08/2013 15:24

as you can tell from my username, i'm a fan of spin Grin

Love the cricket Smile

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 15:28

talc plus Boycott moaning on about his mother catching it in her pinny/bowling them out with a toffee apple, playing on uncovered pitches etc.

swanny - I'm a lover of seam and pace but I think Swanny is hilarious. His Ashes Diaries on YouTube are very entertaining.

nokidshere · 01/08/2013 15:30

It's a good job it's calm and soothing because cricket is e everything in this house from April to September!! My boys (and dh) live, eat and breathe it ... And play 5/6 days a week!'

swannylovesu · 01/08/2013 15:30

has he done them this time???? Last years were genius. i'm sure Swanny and Jimmy could be a better version of Ant and Dec..

ComposHat · 01/08/2013 15:31

aye swanny I think they might regret not having a second spinner on this pitch.

OP posts:
Goldrill · 01/08/2013 15:31

I know very little about cricket but it is the perfect background noise for me. My dad used to be a teacher and through the summer he would sit in the garden marking A level papers with the cricket on the radio. TMS is hot sunny days of relaxation!

TalcAndTurnips · 01/08/2013 15:32

Compo - I'm watching on Sky at the moment; Gower and Athers are fine but Botham and Warne get right on my tit-end.

Time for some wickets, please, chaps.

swannylovesu · 01/08/2013 15:36

I had a Nick Knight bingo board for last year...must find it again!

Agreed about the 2nd spinner, i think though, once broad gets his first he'll get loads.
