When did Barbie become a stripper?

Oddsocksrus · 30/07/2013 19:28

My dd has just worn me down with requests for a Barbie, we entered the dreaded aisle in toysrus this afternoon and I was horrified

I had a Cindy when I was little, she was a WASP in the true sense, as opposed to White Arse Slapping Prostitute Barbie who came home with us today.

Air stewardess /Pilot Barbie or what ever she was with her pink heels and wheelie case looked ready and willing, 'mile high Barbie' presumably??
Firefighter and police woman Barbie were already for a good night stripping...

I read the press but haven't seen the reality! Am I AIBU to say this is the only one, all her friends have loads it seems but she is so horrible!

Which Barbies live with you?

two daughters, never bought a single Barbie - they had about 3 as gifts, (one had hot pants and a bikini top - not what i call appropriate for a 5yo) but TBH they did not really like them. Bratz are also yukky IMO, they had a couple of them too but just thought they were odd with their massive heads!

BabyMakesMyEyesGoSleepy · 30/07/2013 19:36

We have monster high dolls in my house.

hiddenhome · 30/07/2013 19:49

Go onto ebay and get her a vintage Sindy doll. I have one and you can buy clothes for her too. Barbie is a slut.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 30/07/2013 20:59

Ah now that's a bit harsh calling her a slut, she was with in-the-closet Ken for years. :)

WestieMamma · 30/07/2013 21:36

Sadly we have every Barbie and piece of Barbie tat that's appeared in the shops over the past 20 years. My daughter is obsessed with them although she doesn't play with them anymore, being 20, but she does 'sort them out' on a regular basis :o

Catmint · 30/07/2013 21:49

I made a load of wholesome doll pyjamas. Barbies look much nicer in them. Interestingly, when DD plays, Merida and Belle are the goodies and the Barbies are the baddies.

I got dd a black Barbie off eBay because I couldn't find one in the shops, and I wanted a bit of diversity in the Barbie team. She arrived dressed as Shirley Bassey but she is a pyjama convert now!

We got given a winx doll, they are awful

Oddsocksrus · 31/07/2013 23:25

Winx?? What on earth is that?!

I love the idea of Barbie pj's, genius, I can see I need to get sewing then I can burn the slut gear

Erm - since about 1970?

Barbie was based on a German doll, can't remember the name, but she was most definitely not for children

PoppyWearer · 31/07/2013 23:27

DD was given a ballerina Barbie for her 4th birthday.

She never ever plays with it. Thank goodness!

I have looked into buying her a vintage Sindy. I loved my Sindy doll!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 31/07/2013 23:30

I opted for a winter wonderland (or some such nonsense) Barbie - ankle length ball gown and a shawl. All the others were far too slutty for my liking.
I don't ever remember my vast collection of Barbies wearing so few clothes!

NonnaMai · 31/07/2013 23:36

Monster High is the obsession in our house. They seem to be a vampy goth version of Barbie.

I can't get too worked up about it though. Most girls out grow them soon enough.

AKissIsNotAContract · 31/07/2013 23:41

Ruth Handler invented Barbie in the 1950's for her daughter Barbara, so they definitely were for children from the start.

Bunnygotwhacked · 31/07/2013 23:51

We have monster high here too though she seems to be more collecting now than playing she did diversify to a bratzilla on her birthday a present from her nana I thought the thigh tattoo was a special touch nothing against tattoos I have two but there on a childs toy?

AKiss

I meant the German doll the creator of Barbie based her on was not for children not Barbie herself.

Spiderwithoneeye · 01/08/2013 10:33

Lol Oddsocks

Beeyump · 01/08/2013 10:36

Oh gads, do Bratz dolls still get sold? They are the most hideous, porny creatures and make me angry. I'd feel desperately sad if my nieces ever wanted to play with them, or emulate them. Sad

Yonionekanobe · 01/08/2013 10:40

We have the Disney Barbies, much more wholesome.

One of the scariest things I've seen recently is the Barbie/dog hybrid I saw advertised the other day.

(ps. without wishing to be po-faced, is the 'p' word for Ken really necessary?)

WhiteandGreen · 01/08/2013 10:41

You can usually buy demure clothes for them on e bay.

Yonionekanobe · 01/08/2013 10:43

Barbie/dog hybrid is Pinkie Cooper

Beeyump · 01/08/2013 10:44

What 'p' word? Curious

Beeyump · 01/08/2013 10:44

Ohh, I've just realised. Sorry.
