to think we should have gone abroad

We were talking about booking a holiday. I wanted to go abroad but DH said that we couldn't afford it. I thought we could but apparently we had spent loads of money recently and didn't have enough left. Ok, so that's fine. He decided that all we could afford to do was take the tent somewhere, so that was agreed despite me seriously HATING camping. We hadn't booked anything as yet. Thursday evening, he's decided that we are going to CentreParcs for a week. It's costing more than a week abroad would have (if we had booked earlier) , and I just wish that we had just had a holiday in the sun - pessimistic about the weather by mid-August, and even if it is still like this, we're not going to have air conditioning!

I should say that Centreparcs is definitely beating camping though Grin

YANBU. A week in cp must be costing a fortune. And, er you have read THE threads about centre parcs on here haven't you ? Blush

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 15:29

No, never read a thread about CentreParcs, must make sure I don't! Grin
Never been, never thought it was worth the money. No idea why he's decided this really, no idea how we are going to pay for it either. Unless he's won the lottery and just not told me

Seems a bit off that he is getting to make all the decisions about where you go.

However I love UK holidays, the good thing being there is plenty t

Seems a bit off that he is getting to make all the decisions about where you go.

However I love UK holidays, the good thing being there is plenty to do whatever the weather unlike a lot of places abroad - I have been caught out in the rain many times abroad with nothing to do!

Yonionekanobe · 21/07/2013 15:37

Why is he making the decisions and informing you about what the household finances look like?

YANBU! An overseas holiday could definitely be cheaper 😎

schoolgovernor · 21/07/2013 15:37

So why does he get the final decision on where you go? I'd be bloody furious in your situation.

Undertone · 21/07/2013 15:42

What's stopping you from researching and proposing alternatives?

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 16:03

It's booked now! undertone
I am looking forward to it, just think that if we have the money now, we had it when I wanted to book something abroad. Never mind, we WILL go abroad next year!

do you think he was trying to you know, do something nice?
respond to your dim view of camping?

ENormaSnob · 21/07/2013 16:08

Yanbu

jkklpu · 21/07/2013 16:09

"apparently we had spent loads of money recently" - OP, do you not help to keep track of your family's finances? You make it sound as though you pay no attention which then puts you in a weak position when discussing a major outlay, such as a holiday. Maybe you need to be more involved?

Have a great holiday.

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 16:15

jkklpu I am useless with money and have my own budget for the week, food, kids activities, petrol etc while DH keeps an eye on the rest. I hadn't realised that we had spent so much on extras, but then again, maybe we hadn't. He pays for big outlays, such as holidays/ major school uniform overhaul etc. My choice as much as his. It's not that so much as I really wanted to take the kids abroad and they wanted to go as well. We thought we would be doing it, and he said we could afford it, but then said the money was gone. Now it's reappeared again somehow. (I know that he didn't like it when we went abroad last time).

valiumredhead · 21/07/2013 16:17

Why in earth don't you discuss things properly, why does one person device what the whole family do?

valiumredhead · 21/07/2013 16:18

Decide

cory · 21/07/2013 16:46

You never know: the worst downpour I have ever been caught in was in southern Italy; the street turned into a fastflowing river in the space of 5 minutes. I have shivered in Salamanca in July. Ds is currently wrapped in fog on his foreign holiday (admittedly in the north of Europe) whilst we are roasting here in the UK.

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 16:48

Just seen my sister in Kenya has posted about the crap weather! Grin serious danger of outing myself here

SueDoku · 21/07/2013 18:34

OP, if money can disappear and reappear like that without your knowledge, have you considered that he might be gambling.... Just a thought? Hmm

nkf · 21/07/2013 18:40

Stop being useless with money. Unless you want more of this stuff.

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/07/2013 18:49

How on earth have you got gambling by what op has posted? Confused
She explained her finances upthread, it works for them.
Save for abroad next year OP.
I'm now waiting for calls of he's controlling and LTB.

Parker231 · 21/07/2013 18:51

OP - are you not worried that money you thought you had for the family holiday has now 'disappeared'. What has happened to the bank statements ?

Scholes34 · 21/07/2013 19:56

When you're packing your bags to come home, just enjoy the fact that you don't have to travel back via an airport with all the hanging around and waiting that entails. Last time we went to Centerparcs, it was less than an hour door to door and the in-laws paid.
