AIBU and a bit petty?

OK trying not to make excuses but this does sound like an excuse? 16 weeks pregnant, suffering from HG and I am unsure if I am been very unreasonable/petty and general hormonal.

DF and I moved into our new home in December. Old early 1900s property which needs work (mainly updating / electrics /plumbing etc.). We have started on the work and are currently doing two rooms (main bedroom and one other room upstairs). The contractors have all come highly recommended and so far I am very impressed with their work. They are good at what they do. When the contractors started about 8 weeks ago I thought it was only decent for me to allow them to make themselves cups of tea/coffee and left them biscuits out whilst DF and I were at work.

8 weeks on and I am starting to regret this discussion and I am very very irritated and pissed off with two of the contractors (electrician and decorators - mainly decorators). It seems this lot have very little respect for DF, myself, our home and possessions. I have been coming home to find they have broken god knows how many cups (two separate cup set shops already in 8 weeks), they leave their dirty cups in the rooms behind boxes etc. (found one with mould growing out of it the other day), make a complete mess in the kitchen and leave sht stains in the toilet. They have also taken to going into our fridge (leaving dirty finger prints all over the fridge, inside & out). That's bad enough but this week things have become even more irritating? It seems they have now started helping themselves to fruit juice, cans, fruit out of the bowl, making themselves sandwiches (using what they find in the fridge and our cupboards) and yesterday we found a couple of my DFs' empty beer bottles in the garden. THIS IS NO JOKE AND I SHT YOU NOT!

I am really f@king pissed off. They are taking the piss and I am about to blow a fuse and tell them what I think. The only thing stopping me is the are brilliant at what they do and the rooms are only half done. AIBU, is this my own fault for allowing them to make themselves cups of tea/coffee and leaving biscuits out in the first place?

It's polite to leave tea, coffee and biscuits ours get value with no complaints yetfor the contractors but the rest is taking the piss.

Tell them one time when all together that you feel they are invading your home by helping themselves to food, breakages will be taken from the final bill as will the cost of a food shop if it continues past today.
Remind them it's polite to tidy up behind themselves and that includes using the facilities!

I'm angry on your behalf!!

Bringmewineandcake · 19/07/2013 13:44

Erm...not U at all. Is there a foreman / project manager you could speak with and get all this reigned in?

Wishfulmakeupping · 19/07/2013 13:47

If its only half finished I wouldn't want to puss them off but I would start hiding stuff. Or get them a cool box so they know what you're leaving out for them Iyswim

LittlePeaPod · 19/07/2013 13:49

THank you for your responses. Unfortuantely they are all seperate contractors employed by DF and I. Which means on project manager or foreman.

I am so angry thinking about it makes me want to cry.

InTheRed I will take you advise and speak to them all whilst they are together. Hopefully do this on Monday as working from home due to MW appointment..

Add it up and take it off the final bill.

LittlePeaPod · 19/07/2013 13:50

THanks Wishful another good idea. That's my concern. The work is only half done and worried what they may do if I kick off..

Ill come round and put them straight for you, cheeky bastard!

LittlePeaPod · 19/07/2013 13:59

Thank you.. The worst thing is they know I am pregnant and suffering with HG. They have heard me puking my guts up enough times but clearly even that doesn't make them think.. "mmmmm maybe this woman might appreciate us cleaning up after ourselves." Angry

I wouldn't bother speaking to them about it. They shouldn't need to be asked to stop this behaviour......they should already know!
go out and buy some of those really gross pyrex mugs, you know, those brown ones that your grandparents used to keep. Then hide all your nice cups and leave the ugly pyrex ones next to the kettle with sugar, tea, coffee and milk, and maybe a (small) tin of biscuits.
Next, remove the bread, and any stuff in the fridge that could be eaten without cooking, IYSWIM.
Hide the fruitbowl in a dark cupboard somewhere, and leave a big sign over the kitchen sink that says "Please leave cups on draining board after washing them, Thankyou"
Arses will soon get the message then.

whois · 19/07/2013 16:32

Don't bother with hiding stuff.

Just tell then straight up - I'm not happy about the level of breakages, or that you are leaving dirty cups about. I feel this shows a total lack of respect for me, amd my hoise. I'm very angry that you have been helping yourself to food out of my fridge, this is absolutely unacceptable. As from how, this kitchen is off limits to you.

I would buy a kettle and 6 cheap mugs, and a box of biscuits and tea bags as a 'goodwill' gesture to put in the room they are working in as the kitchen is off limits. They can bring a new carton of milk with them every day in a cool bag if they want milk.

LittlePeaPod · 19/07/2013 18:26

So just got in from work... Feeling exhausted, really sick and now I have to clean up after them - AGAIN... Been cup hunting and found 5, just left everywhere upstairs and burst into tears... God only knows how they treat their own homes...

That's it. I will be talking to them on Monday.. DF is on ha stag this weekend and won't be here to calm me down before Monday! Sad and Angry

Wow, they are taking the piss. Our lot will help themselves to tea, coffee and biscuits I leave out (after me telling them a few times to do so). But non of the other stuff. They always washe the cups, even though I've told them they can just stick them in the dishwasher. They broke one of my mugs and a week later turned up with an identical replacement!

I think you need stern words. Most blokes are a little bit fearful of a hormonal pregnant woman, so you shouldn't have any problems after a bit of a rant on Monday Grin

Binkyridesagain · 19/07/2013 18:48

I have builders in atm. They bring their own food and drinks. I am in most of the day so when I'm making a drink for myself I will make for them as well. If I had a kitchen sink I am sure they would clean their cups but as I haven't, when they have finished drinking they hand their cup back and would never dream of leaving it lying around expecting me to clear up after them.

I am also pretty sure that they would not dream of ferreting in my fridge or cupboards looking for food they can steal from me.

I think you need to have words, if they can't respect your home then any extras that you provide will be removed.

CrapBag · 19/07/2013 19:07

Wow YANBU!! Surprised you asked.Smile

They must know that are totally taking the piss. They should replace your broken cups as well. If they continue after you tell them on Monday I would actually put a lock on the kitchen and tell them they have to bring their own supplies.

WaitMonkey · 19/07/2013 21:42

YANBU in the slightest. What a nightmare.

celestialbows · 19/07/2013 22:38

Fuck me they are ripping the Piss. You have to say something or if you are feeling too fragile at the moment then someone needs to say something on your behalf, it's disgusting
