I know that at this time of year there are plenty of Teacher Present threads , so apologies for adding another......

DS is in reception and has 2 job share teachers and a TA. I didn't realise Teachers Presents were expected until a large collection was suggested by a few mums . I feel really uncomfortable about these type of things so declined.

I had intended to get DS to make each teacher a card himself and write s

Based on my mother in law, she tends to only keep the gift or card that means the most to her (so the child that sticks in the memory for trying hard or overcoming some kind of shit in their life) and keeps the rest for a week before rehoming things. She hates nick knacks, gives the copious bottles of wine to us (I like Christmas) and puts the chocolates and soaps back into the school raffles (unless they're posh ones then she keeps them)

I've learned from her not to really go all out for teachers. My kids are writing a card and one is making their teacher a pencil case because he admired the one they made for themself.

Ask your child what they want to do.

As a teacher, I'd relish the card and a kind word.

Don't worry about it.

I'm a teacher and love to get cards. I work in a deprived area and gifts are not common, but just a card or a parent popping in and saying thank you at the end of the year is lovely. My own children will be making cards for their teachers.

SparkleToffee · 15/07/2013 22:34

Thank you .... Was ok with our card and home made biscuits until the giant collections started !

Home made card and biscuits sounds better than parents trying to outdo each other in a collection.

thebody · 15/07/2013 23:48

yes home made always lovely.
