... to not understand this thing with names on Coca Cola bottles

I am quite prepared to admit I may be an old git and out of touch. I don't facebook or tweet. (Not that I don't know how, I have been and had a look at both and could not see the attraction.) Perhaps as a bit of an old gimmer I am not the target audience for this product. The advertising to support this has obviously passed me by.

But I really, really don't understand why they expect more people to buy a bottle of Coke because it has someone else's name on it. Or am I getting mixed up and you are meant to search the shelves for your own name?

Can someone explain to me the concept behind this marketing bollocks strategy?

I would sort of get it if you had a popular name

But if you have an uncommon name like mine it's just a waste of time

Annunziata · 12/07/2013 13:51

They're doing it in Italy too. They are better than the ones here though, things like Mamma, Chic, Il VIP, Tesoro (treasure), DJ, and all the names.

pommedechocolat · 12/07/2013 13:54

Levvy - It's in Italy!

curryeater · 12/07/2013 14:00

House - I would if I had a dealer who put names on the spliffs. But no.

PrincessKitKat · 12/07/2013 14:32

Grin curryeater.

I find it strangely satisfying to 'choose' a name. I go for the most horrible one I can find if me or DH arent easily available. I don't rummage.
I shall NOT be listing my 'horrible coke names' here for obv reasons...

ninah · 12/07/2013 14:37

it's brilliant and I predict a whole lot more of this

HouseAtreides · 12/07/2013 14:46

I think I would have fun choosing a name that wasn't mine if I bought Coke (I don't drink it generally). A nice Bernard or Geraldo.

LazyMonkeyButler · 12/07/2013 14:47

I've got a very common/popular name and soon got fed up of buying 'me' - it really isn't difficult to find. So I now like to choose who I'm going to be for the day - so far I have been Ryan, Phil, Dave, Jen, Scott, Natalie and - my personal fave - Katarzyna Grin.

I've never met a Katarzyna in RL. Now I feel like I have (sad, I know).

They don't do Tom though - such a mega common/popular name, I was very surprised & DNephew more than a little p'd off.

We clearly care too much Grin.

I am disappointed
where are all the marjories and ethels and kathleens and olives ffs

diddl · 12/07/2013 14:51

I don't get it either.

None of us drink coke & being able to drink a bottle with our name on wouldn't change that!

Owllady · 12/07/2013 14:51

ha! both mine and dh's names have been mentioned on this thread
I haven't seen either :(

ninah · 12/07/2013 14:53

I have olive spread phnarr phnarr

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/07/2013 14:53

When this first started in May my PIL went off the charts in excitement and spent most of his visit to us searching the shelves for his name, Johnny, or even John. He was very put out that he couldn't find one Grin

The man is 72 for heavens sakes. I reckon as a gimmick it's working very well!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/07/2013 14:54

PIL I meant FIL. MIL couldn't give a fig and you would never find her name anyways.

flipchart · 12/07/2013 15:01

I have never bought a bottle of coke. I've just realised that!
