Travelling without insurance

DH is going to follow (on his bike), some of the mountain stages of Tour De France and says he's not going to bother with travel insurance.

Am I being unreasonable to be upset about this, seeing as it will be me who would have to sell the house find £30k if he needs repatriating.

How would you handle the conversation?

Whats the problem, everybody knows that cyclists never get injured.

Tell him if he goes and needs medical assistance, he's paying for it. And mean it.

It's less than £50 and might save 1000s. Do you have already have a policy with your back account perhaps ?

Of course he has to have insurance! Don't bother having a conversation about it, just arrange it yourself. It only takes a few minutes.
Make sure he has his European health card with him and make sure the insurance covers cycling.

Is he nuts.

I would just insurance for him because I couldn't afford to pay medical bills and it would be the kids that suffer.

He doesn't need insurance for france. He will be covered with an E11 or EHIC (as long as he bothers to get one)

My neighbour got knocked off her bike by a stupid bus driver recently; her face got smashed and she was lucky to not be more seriously injured.

She's a careful cyclist; it can happen to anyone.

Definitely insure him!

EHIC only secures you treatment on same terms as a national for that country, and does not cover repatriation.

He needs to carry the EHIC with him at all times too. It's not enough to just have one, you have to have it on you.

HE DOES DOES DOES NEED INSURANCE!! The EHIC will just get him what the locals get. It will NOT repatriate him. It may not even pay hospital bills.

Cantspel, you are badly badly wrong, I hope you read this. There are people languishing in European hospitals waiting for their family to sell the house/go bankrupt/raise the funds to get them home.

Travel insurance for a week in France should cost about £20. Get it whatever it costs. Yes, you need the EHIC too but it is NOT a substitute for travel insurance.

We've stuck our EHICs to the back of our passports - makes it easy to identify which passport is which and ensures that we always have them when travelling.

You need insurance as well as the E111 card. Have you checked if you already have it with your bank or credit card? We have it with Nationwide. WTF are people thinking when they travel without it?! I've used mine a few times, and it's completely non-negotiable if we're going abroad. Tell your DH he's a knob, then book it for him Smile

If you've got any other trips planned it may work out cheaper overall to get at yearly policy for the whole family.

No repat but would cover all treatment. It is France not some hell hole in the middle east and i am sure french hospitals are better than british.

EHIC also only gives you the equivalent of the host country's free/basic healthcare which can differ hugely.

You absolutely do need it even in France. Dm was seriously ill in hospital in Italy and insurance paid for dfs hotel, a translator, some meals, medical assistance on the flight home etc. Also remember that if the nearest hospital turns out to be private you either pay up or pay for an expensive ambulance trip to a state hospital.

Friend's daughter went skiing no insurance broke her leg basic treatment covered by EHIC yes, but due to nature of fracture unsuitable for return in normal airline seat. Ultimately her dad drive and collected her, fortunately he had a Range Rover which was big enough to accommodate injured leg for long journey home. He lost three days work collecting her and still had a hospital bill on £5000 to pay to cover stuff not covered by EHIC.
