To be shocked at the window cleaner?

BloomBloom · 01/07/2013 14:52

My window cleaner is a very nice man, but very loud. He also doesnt have a set time of the fortnight when he cleans my windows, usually comes when he likes.

Today my young DD is a bit under a weather and I spent the best part of an hour settling her and getting her asleep for her nap. As soon as she fell asleep, the door knocked - the window cleaner.

I almost certainly know that if I opened the door she wake up, so I did something very naughty and pretended I wasntin Blush

I sat in the kitchen and drank a coffee and heard him washthe living room window. Just that one.

He then posted a note through the door saying all front windows washed with a bill for the full price!

I know I was probably being a bit rude for ignoring the door but I had my reasons. Im shocked he has tried to charge me full price when he only washed one window (took about 30 seconds)

Time for a new window cleaner I think ...

YANBU, what a rip off! I had to get rid of one once because he taught my then 8 and 6 yr old DDs vaguely rude nursery rhymes Blush

What a cheeky beggar!

Wylye · 01/07/2013 15:05

Cheeky bugger!
Yep, find a new window cleaner and tell him why.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/07/2013 15:06

Can you apologise for no answering the door as you were 'in the shower' and ask him if he was called away as when you came downstairs to open the door he had vanished.

MmeLindor · 01/07/2013 15:06

Am I missing something?

Wouldn't a customer normally notice if only one window was washed?

How on earth did he think he would get away with that?

LEMisdisappointed · 01/07/2013 15:06

he sounds like a twat - get rid, we used to clean windows, i quite liked it

sureitis · 01/07/2013 15:17

YANBU. It's your house, you can answer the door to whoever whenever you like especially when you knew it was the window cleaner and you were busy dealing with your unwell child. I very rarely answer the door to anyone unless it is prearranged.

In relation to your issue with only 1 window being cleaned bring it up with him politely next time apologise for missing him but you were dealing with sick DC however you noticed that not all the windows were cleaned, was the bill an error? Or words to that effect Smile If you don't you'll prob seethe over it for the length of time he's your window cleaner so best to get it out in the open imo and not waste any more energy.

mamachelle · 01/07/2013 15:19

what a sod! wonder how many other people he tries that with! dont know what your payment arrangement is but id be inclined to phone him and say something like-
'sorry i didnt answer the door to you earlier, poorly child. just wondering when you will be round to wash the rest of the windows so i know when to have your money ready'

LimitedEditionLady · 01/07/2013 15:19

My window cleaner doesnt do front of house and denies it.He couldnt deny it when I purposely marked the windows and it remained there for two months. It was such a noticeable mark too.He thought I wasnt in too yet I was and have a very opinionated dog who tells people off near the house so i knew he hadnt done it!

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 01/07/2013 15:20

My window came today - apparently, bill was shoved through the letter box. The windows look marginally cleaner -maybe - the window frames certainly not. Trouble is he's the only one that will do them where we are... at least it's not horribly expensive I suppose, but I'd rather pay more and have them done properly!!

If you can get someone else, I would.

LimitedEditionLady · 01/07/2013 15:24

A lot of iffy window cleaners out there!

LEMisdisappointed · 01/07/2013 15:28

This makes me Angry I should like to do windows again - its strangely satisfying! but dp working now and i don't drive or do heights Why can't people just do a good job!! its not rocket science

I can understand why it is difficult to get someone else though as window cleaners are as territorial as wolves and you have to be careful about treading on other peoples toes so a "round" tends to be covered by one particular outfit. A window cleaner isn't going to want to travel "off round" for just one house.

Tee2072 · 01/07/2013 15:30

Fortnightly? Really? I get my windows washed once a year!

I'm either a slattern or cheaper than the rest of you.

Probably both.

timidviper · 01/07/2013 15:33

We live near the sea so our windows get very mucky and I can't be without a window cleaner but I have come home at times when it is pouring with rain and blowing a gale to find a card through and the windows filthy with salt and sand which makes me a bit Hmm

BloomBloom · 01/07/2013 16:32

Bloomin' toerag isnt he! And not the only rogue window cleaner I see... I normally make him a drink when im home too, and offer biscuits hmmph.

Im liking the idea of leaving a mark on the window, may become a little detective. After I have questioned him about today of course.

Ours rarely seemed to do the whole lot despite charging for them, the price kept going up too. I'd heard grumblings from friends & neighbours too.
They then scratched one of the top ones and that was the final straw.
We sacked them and bought a high reach window washer pole. It wasn't cheap but only about the same as 4 visits from the window cleaner.... and for the first time since they started they looked really clean (well except for the sticky kid handmarks on the inside whilst watching fascinated by the pole) .
Wished we'd sacked them sooner as I was sure they were crap but DH kept wanting to give them one more chanceAngry

NutcrackerFairy · 01/07/2013 16:38

wonkylegs where did you buy your high reach window washer pole from?

We live on the first floor and were considering getting a window cleaner but after reading these stories I'd rather just do it myself!

wonkylegs · 01/07/2013 16:42

We got ours from the fab ironmongery shop on our highstreet but I've seen similar on amazon.

I'm afraid I find it very funny you caught him out! Do what sauv says - call him on it.

You're entitled not to answer the door, the one who's 'naughty' is him, cheeky sod!

bootsycollins · 01/07/2013 18:53

Dh says "sack the cunt, he's obviously done it before you may as well let them go dirty than pay some cunt for not cleaning them". He speaks with bitter experience, in our last house the window cleaner tried the same trick, didnt work though because dh was confined to the house after having a minor op and had caught him red handed. Window cleaner still denied it, dh sacked him.
