To think potty training should involve wiping and washing?

Oh here we go - I'm in for a flaming but ....

Just been to friend's house. Their daughter is same age as my DS (2.5) and she is potty training. For some reason my friend didn't fancy letting the children run about in the garden so we were in her lounge with me looking longingly at the sunshine. Her DD was wearing no pants - which of course is totally fine. The potty was in the room.

Four times whilst I was there her Dd squatted down on the potty and did a wee. Each time she just then got back up and started playing again. No wiping, so some of the ride-on toys had pee on them and drips on the carpet. No washing of hands either - although I can appreciate she didn't 'touch' anything so maybe there is no need? The potty was emptied eventually - but only after a toy fell in it.

I haven't started potty training with DS yet so I'm fully prepared to be told I am BU but surely you would wipe and then wash your hands? Even if it is twice and hour while they are still learning?

For me wiping and washing was all part of toilet training.

Erm I'm with you. Full potties and dripping bits seems gross and totally unnecessary.

YANBU It's pretty disgusting to leave a potty lying around with wee in it. It should be emptied after each use.

It goes without saying that arses should be wiped and hands washed.

The potty was emptied after every use in my house.

It's all part of the routine. I empty the potty down the loo & DC flush & then wash hands. Well that's how we did it anyway.

The rare occasions I didn't notice DC had used it, they would try & pick the potty & contents up, to bring it to me & show me. Obviously I didn't want that, so I emptied it

Gross yanbu I never understood the potty in the living room thing anyway my friend used to leave one out for her dd in her playroom with no supervising twas also gross.

Part of learning is to go is holding it until in the right room wipe wash hand etc.

We had potty in the living room. DD wiped but didn't always wash her hands.
Then when we progressed to doing her wees on the loo (maybe 1-2 weeks in) we started washing hands.

She potty trained about 4-5 months ago and now always wipes, flushes and washes her hands. For me it was just little steps, so I had the potty right there at first and didn't enforce the hand washing. Then gradually moved the potty nearer to the bathroom. Then taught bathroom 'etiquette'.

Having said all that I emptied the potty each time (and would certainly have been embarrassed to not empty it in the presence of visitors!) and I think wee drips on toys etc is unpleasant.

But hopefully it's early days and your friend will iron these things out soon

Gross. I try to enforce hand washing but quite often once she's done she's 'off' and I simply CBA to chase her and force her to do it IYSWIM. Don't want to make a big battle out of handwashing.
As for wiping, at 2.5 DD doesn't do a good wipe. I'll go so far as to say she's a completely unreliable wiper. So I do it for her 90% of the time.
