Until about 4 years ago no-one smoked. Now there are constant references to cigs. Deirdre smokes ("Patches don't work for me")' , so does Peter, and Steve MacDonald, Liz MacDonald,Lloyd, Karl, Becky. No-one else on tv smokes! Dot used to in EE, but that just fitted with her being a bit silly. What do you reckon is going on?

Val and Kerry in Emmerdale smoke as did Chas' son Aaron. Oh and Liz and Becky aren't in Corrie anymore. :o

Not sure, I have caught corrie in the 70s and Eastenders since Lou Beale and den and Angie and all smoked.

Ditto emmerdale when it was a farm and crossroads!!

People have always smoked in corrie - i've grown up with it can always remember people smoking. Maybe it's more obvious now coz less people smoke?

They've always smoked in Corrie. Bet Lynch, Stan Ogden, Vera & Jack, Alec whatsisface. Many a scene ended with a fag or cigar being put out in an overflowing ashtray. Deirdre and Peter have been smoking for a really long time.

I find the level of alcohol consumption shocking though.

Thanks for jogging my memory everyone. My thesis was obviously comprehensively wrong . I think littleblackno has it right - either that or maybe I notice now that I'm watching with kids! There do seem to be constant references to smoking though.... I guess I wouldn't mind a bit of self-censorship there, as it does sometimes seem that my favourite soap is promoting an unhealthy habit. I guess the smoking levels are fairly realistic - It's just that they hardly ever swear [ I know, I know - the watershed], and I'd much prefer it if my kids grew up swearing occasionally than smoking!
Dione - I hadn't noticed the amount of drinking (probably because I'm a non-smoker but I love ! But they do deal with the consequences of drinking (Peter, Carla, various people making a bit of a eejit of themselves, spilling family secrets etc. when drunk....), whereas people don't get ill from smoking or ever manage to give up. (I'll be fifty people are going to come on now and tell me my memory failed me on that one too!)

Becky and Liz aren't in it at the moment - and showing some characters smoking has always been the case. It possibly stands out more these days because smokers have been removed from so many other programmes.

I think you're right - they were going on about it a bit too much the other day and I thought the same. I was only half watching but I remember thinking that I wouldn't be surprised if there is a smoking related plot soon.

I have a vague recollection that a producer said a while ago that if an actor smokes in RL, then their character smokes on screen. Or have I invented that?

I think Rita and Audrey both used to smoke, and Kylie did (out in the yard with Becky) when she first appeared, but she doesn't now. But I don't remember quitting featuring as a storyline.

Maybe kylie quit cus she's pregnant, wouldn't be great showing a smoking pregnant character
