to ask the school to call my mobile/work number?

DS1 had an accident at school today (reception). They called to let me know and to say I should call for more info if worried. They left message on home phone.

When he started the contacts form asked for work etc and I noted that should I be needed to call mobile/work as I work everyday.

I assume if it was more serious they would have called work, but feel like they will think I didn't care enough to call back (but only picked up message at 5).

Shall I pop in to office to check my contact details, absolutely not complaining but feel like a crap mum for not returning their call.

YANBU to pop in or send a note asking to ensure that your primary contact number is work /mobile (whichever you decide is most appropriate).

My children's school will leave a message in my home phone but will call work & mobile too until they speak to someone - even if its a minor problem.

If you get a good signal wherever you are, I'd give them your mobile number as your primary number. And you could give that number out on your outgoing message on land line, just in case.

Been there done that...INSIST they call work/mobile, and have it as the first contact. It's no guarantee though, believe me.

Definitely check their contact details. Our school's system only has room for two contact numbers per child, home and whatever mobile you have at the time... I need them to have at least 4 unfortunately, DH's Mob, My mob, Home, and work. (Thankfully I have 2 children at school, therefore, 4 numbers are connected to us!).

Fortunately our school always tries mobiles first, though I have mine on silent at work (company policy) so the 2nd number school tries is always work phone.. I will always get any message. I only work two days a week though!

Our school secretary is brilliant and follows a logical process that doesn't involve her having to know my schedule. Mobile, work, home, rinse and repeat.

It's a nightmare for everyone really.. YABU to expect miracles, YANBU to understand how infuriating it is all round (for both staff and parents).

My dcs school work their way through the list of numbers until they speak to a human, just leaving a trail of messages as they go - I would have thought that was why you live a list of numbers.

I work in childcare and know how annoying it is to try to get a parent, only to discover they changed jobs/numbers. I am fanatical about having the right details with everyone.

BackforGood our school call if either ds has had a nasty bump just to let us know before pickup time comes and we arrive to find a rather battered looking child!

Backforgood - they said a courtesy call (where I work that means so your not shocked by the sight of then when you collect)

YANBU. I deliberately put my mobile number first because I'm out of the house frequently and I even wrote on the form that this was to be the number they call first. I provided the home number as well just to be sure. Every time they ring the home phone, every fucking time. When they eventually try the mobile the receptionist always says in a very accusatory manner "We tried the home phone but you didn't answer". I've been in to school twice and asked them to remove the home phone from the records but they won't. And when I asked why they deliberately ignore the instructions on the form? "Because it costs more to call a mobile!" Seriously?! It's cost you more overall because you wasted a call to the home phone you stup[id woman!

I only ever put mobile number as a contact, didn't realise people still ring landlines!

I'm fed up with telling my son's school that there's no point in phoning my mobile - I'm a teacher so my phone will be on silent and I won't pick up messages while I'm teaching. However, if they phone my work number (ie the school office) I can be fetched straight away if it's urgent.

That seems to be too complicated for them, possibly because I work in primary and at secondary schools (OK his school) it's normal for teachers to check their phone in lessons. Also of course a secondary site is much larger - they don't seem to be able to get their head round the fact that my classroom is opposite the office!

To my mind, it's the downside of having computerised data.
In the old days of each child having a card on which details were written, there was space to put all these... "On Mon Tue and Wed am, call this number first (insert office number), but on Wed pm and thursday try this one first (insert home number) but on Fridays you'll have to use this one (insert Gran's number)". By pulling up the info on a computer screen, it can't cope with different options.
