did you not have a different card you could use e.g. credit card

Bowlersarm · 02/06/2013 18:50

I've been with the CO-OP for about 25 years. Have never had any issues-in fact they've been more than great, and I owe them great loyalty.

It seems like they are having a few problems recently though Sad

Not meaning to sound rude but maybe a harsh lesson regarding leaving things to the last minute to be had here?

ihearsounds · 02/06/2013 18:55

Never trust technology. It has too many problems. For this reason I have several bank accounts. No it's not something that financial advisors and such advice, however, when the system is done in one bank you aren't screwed.

AgentProvocateur · 02/06/2013 19:12

I've been happily using my co-OP bank card all afternoon with no problems. In fact, I've never had a problem with that bank.

WineNot · 02/06/2013 19:47

Interesting... A 'decline' is usually a genuine response from a bank... Not a message you get when there is a time out or systems failure.

Might be worth talking to them tomorrow to see why you got this response when using your card?

ballstoit · 02/06/2013 19:49

So you can't even use a cash machine? Seems a huge system down that. How do you know that's the issue?

My smile card was fine this afternoon and thats coop.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2013 19:56

I've had no problems with my CoOp cash/debit or credit card today and have also done my weekly shop.

MissAnnersley · 02/06/2013 19:59

I am with the co op bank too and used my card about 3 or 4 times this afternoon with no problem at all.

Lollyheart · 02/06/2013 19:59

No only have one account, no credit cards .

It's the bank that's down not a problem with my account or card, I called them straight away, there's a message saying the whole system is down and they're dealing with it.

fut it's not really last min tho is it.
I had done my shopping fully expecting to be able to pay for it.

Thankfully was able to transfer some money over the phone into fil account to get dinner.

We've had problems too - unable to take cash out this afternoon so you're not alone. And definitely not a cash flow issue.

thecook · 02/06/2013 22:55

I have been having problems too. Unable to withdraw cash today from the machine or use my card in the Co-op supermarket. My neighbour lent me £30. The call centre said the they hadn't a clue what had gone wrong.

I will stick with them though. The call centre staff in Skelmersdale are lovely and friendly.

thecook · 02/06/2013 22:58

I live in London and work in Old Street. There are very few branches in London. I am going to have to go to Angel in my lunchbreak to withdraw cash if the systems are not up by tommorow.

lougle · 02/06/2013 23:01

How odd, I used my Co-op card at 5pm and it was fine.

RocksThatIGot · 02/06/2013 23:07

It happened to me earlier too, I'm with co-op. rushed around like a mad thing to get me and dd ready and out of the house to go to a car boot sale starting at 1pm. Went to the cash point on the way, wouldn't give me any money, tried the one next to it, no money from that one either. Phoned the bank on my mobile to get the message saying that there were issues with cash point withdrawals and point of sale transactions. So had to wait on hold for 15 mins to speak to someone to get them to transfer money to my Barclays account. Got to the car boot 30 mins late and had missed the bargains. V annoying but never had any issues with them before today.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/06/2013 01:00

I switched my main account from Barclays to Smile and they missed setting up a direct debit (one of theirs!) to my new account. I've recently found out that they missed another one for the last six months. I'm probably going to switch back. Barclays may not be as ethical but they ran my busy account much better.

SpooMoo · 03/06/2013 03:55

Where would you go though? At least Co-op are ethical. NatWest/RBS also keep having similar tech failures iirc.

ItsYonliMe · 03/06/2013 04:13

Lolly - so this has worked out okay for you this time and at least you have learnt a lesson in ensuring that you have another means of getting cash out in future or having an "emergency" stash of cash at home.

Weegiemum · 03/06/2013 08:55

I used my coop Visa card once and smile card twice yesterday afternoon no bother - never had any issues with them and we've been customers for years.

I'd rather have occasional glitches though, than use one of the other banks - the ethical side is why we chose them, and why we'll stay with them.
