To think there should be a law against religious callers?

The ones that come knocking at your door?? I'm unlucky that I seem to live in an area that is full of them.

This morning we had two christian ones come to the door (I'm actually christian, but really don't agree with this). When I opened the door one stepped forward and tried to force a leaflet into my hand. I refused to take it and very politely, calmly, but firmly explained that I do not appreciate them knocking on my door and I don't want them forcing their religious views on me. One then said that they don't force their religion on anyone. I told him that by coming to my home uninvited he was doing just that. I then politely asked them to leave.

I hate it! Surely there should be a law against this?? If someone wants to find religion it should be their choice and they should be allowed to seek it out rather than have these people shoving it down everyone's throats. AIBU? Does anyone appreciate them doing this??

By the way there is a 'no religious callers' sign on my door which they rather obviously ignored!!

They would need to be some kind of evangelist to knock on your door. I understand that active "spreading the word" is part and parcel of their credo.
I don't think you can ban it legally as that would negate both freedom of speech and incite religious intolerance.

TheHerringScreams · 01/06/2013 19:06

Yes!

We have, in order of most frequent- Mormons, JWs, Protestants, Satanists, Muslims, Catholics.

Aargh!

Ilovemyself · 01/06/2013 19:08

Satanists coming to the door? Never had that one!

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:08

Religious intolerance?? Really?? I have no problem with anyone having a religious belief but why must we be bothered in our own homes by something we have shown no interest in?? Freedom of speech is fine, but they step over the line when they come to my home!!

Just don't answer the door. Simples.

JustinBiebermakesmevom · 01/06/2013 19:10

Heffalump - Do you live in the East End of Glasgow by any chance ? We had Jehovah's Witnesses at the door (again !) this morning and the lady knocked my door despite their being a sign basically saying "please do not knock my door to sell/give advice. We don't need it". I would never dream of telling anyone to bugger off or be rude so took her leaflet on "Is God Cruel ?" and said thank you. This is the 3rd time this year they've been at our door. The last time we were quite obviously on the way out of the house, trying to pack the buggy and kids into the car but they insisted on talking and again I didn't want to be rude. Then one woman took a header off my front step (she wasn't injured) and my less diplomatic OH piped up "Aye see, God does work in mysterious ways !"

Incidentally I will be telling her that I think God is cruel...My Mum who has never smoked , barely drinks and has been plagued with various illnesses in the last 3 years has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be having a mastectomy in a fortnight. But that's a whole other thread....

lightrain · 01/06/2013 19:11

Completely agree, YANBU. In fact, I think all cold calling should be illegal. I find it very intrusive!

scaevola · 01/06/2013 19:13

I'd start with dodgy builders, door to door sales and all collectors (whatever the cause). For they are aiming to take more than just you time.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:13

Not answering the door would be a fantastic idea, but due to the sign on my door I stupidly assumed they weren't bloody religious callers!! I was half expecting them to be police actually because there has been some serious prooblems between my neighbours lately.

JustinBiebermakesmevom · 01/06/2013 19:14

I have noticed an overall decline in the number of cold callers we have since we put up our sign in the window. You should try it lightrain. Think you can download a copy from the moneysavingexpert site. I only opened the door to these two elderly women as they looked like my gran and I'm soft as shi*te ! If it had been a man with a clipboard and ID badge I would have pointed at the sign and told him to jog on...

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:14

Lightrain - intrusive!!! That was the word I was looking for!!

LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2013 19:16

How is it different to the fish man coming - or anyone who wants to sell you shit Confused

I hate all callers coming to my door but I wouldn't pick out the religious ones particularly.

I'm rude and dismissive to all callers as have a no cold caller sign.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:17

Justin - nope I'm in Essex, these botherers are everywhere!

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2013 19:18

So I disagree with the OP - it should be all cold callers and not ones that just particularly irritate us (as that's subjective).

JustinBiebermakesmevom · 01/06/2013 19:19

Think I will remove my no cold callers sign and replace it with some upside down crucifixes and 666 posters....That might keep the buggers away.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:19

Laurie - they are just as bad if not worse but we are lucky that there don't seem to be many round here. Therefore my rage has been pointed at the religious ones!

QueenStromba · 01/06/2013 19:31

Must be the season for it - there was a thread about the exact same thing on Thursday.

I completely agree that nobody should knock on your door unsolicited.

crumblepie · 01/06/2013 19:41

i get fed up with the windows, conservatories, facia and soffit, gas boiler, solar panels, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, driveways, charities and religion, going to need a bloody big sign on my door.should be a law to stop them all .

Loulybelle · 01/06/2013 19:45

Im in essex Heffa, and hardly get any, what area are you in,

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:45

As far as I can work out, the only people who would appreciate any sort of cold caller would be very very lonely people who desperately want someone to talk to. I can't see why anyone else would benefit from it!!

OP posts:
HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:47

A shit bit of Rayleigh. What about you? Where ever it is I will consider moving there. Grin

Loulybelle · 01/06/2013 19:50

North Essex, Sible Hedingham, quiet and posh.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 01/06/2013 19:52

Swap? Either that or I may have to mention that your area is rather lacking in religious callers and send them your way. It's only fair that I share them really. Grin

Yes. We had JWs this morning.

Her opening gambit was "How many people, that you know, want peace?"

Being in NI, DP thought she was doing a survey :o so didnt tell her to go away immediately. Apparently shes coming back when hes not in the middle of lunch. Cant wait.
