Playing music in the garden?

We live in a terraced house. Today, when my DH, DD and I were in our garden, my DH put the radio on - in the house with the window open - loudly enough for him to hear it at the end of our averaged sized garden. He has also had it on during the week when he was working in the garden with the radio outside on a table.

I asked him to put it off and he was a bit annoyed. I think it is rude and inconsiderate to play music which might disturb our neighbours. Given the nice weather, it would appear most people were in their gardens and no one else had any music on.

After I pointed this out to him, he put it off. Reluctantly. He told me he thought it was a bit ridiculous and that anywhere else he had lived, he has always has music on when he was outside. He sort of implied that I was in some way "posh" for not wanting to be the source of the music.

I just can't understand how anyone would think that this was ok, bearing in mind the proximity of the neighbours and the fact that not one other person within ear shot was doing this.

AIBU to ask him not to have music on?

I'm surprised after reading the posts to find myself saying that music in gardens does not bother me one bit. I also live in a terraced house and during the recent nice weather lots of different neigbours have been playing their music at different times and I really don't mind at all! My one neighbour (teenage girls!) do blast and I mean BLAST it out but I don't think anyone has ever complained. We must be a bit odd round our way! Btw do you know what really freaks me out? when I've been in the garden for a good while doing this and that and the noises from neighbours eg music, children playing abrubtly ends. Makes me feel a bit sad yep definately weird

It is also one of the laws of physics that the volume of garden music is directly proportional to the shiteness of the music: it is always some tuneless, brainless drivel.
Our most delightful neighbour has his radio on while he is cleaning his car, at such a volume that it can be heard over his vacuum cleaner. Twat.

Yabu, I really don't mind hearing other people's music in the garden, even if its music that isn't to my taste. One of my old neighbours used to have classic fm on throughout the sunny days, I hate that music but it didn't bother me.

Now where we live most people have music on when in the garden and I love the mix of it. It drowns out the mowers and the screaming kids, which although its natural really gets on my nerves.

I think some people need to lighten up a bit. Seem of the things I read on mn about people asking if they can make x noise or that you can't do x in the garden for fear of the neighbours seems ridiculous to me. I've never disliked my neighbours for doing such things, ok it might be irritating but its part and arced of having neighbours, if yu can't stand others people's noise go and live in the middle of nowhere.

Both my NDN have music on when its nice outside!
Different stations on each but i love it! Tune myself into whichever is playing a good song!
Saves me faffing with my own Smile

I hate having to listen to others music. Why have all these personal systems if you're going to "share". I want to hear the birds singing not some numpty boy band. My next door neighbour very kindly played her music so loudly that there wasn't a room in our house where it was quiet. Or next door to us, or next door to them, the downside of a terrace house. She stopped when I went round and asked if she would like some Motorhead playing. (mind you Wagner has the same reaction!)

mermaid101 · 25/05/2013 22:23

Gosh Miaow! I simply came on here to ask people's opinion about asking my DH to turn off his radio, lest we annoy our neighbours, who might not have the same musical tastes, unlike you and your neighbours.

I really don't think there is any need to call me "a right selfish knob". That's a very unpleasant thing to say.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I'll leave it now. I had no idea it would cause such an extreme response.

I was working from home the other day and could hear music. I we t outside to find out where it was coming from. A neighbour was playing his bass guitar at full volume in his garden. I was Hmm. So bloody rude. YANBU

IsItMeOr · 25/05/2013 22:27

For me there's a big distinction between natural/unavoidable noises and artificial/optional noises. So children play, people have parties occasionally and we all mow our lawns and have new paving slabs laid which require cutting. But routinely playing your music outside at anything above a quiet volume is noise pollution to me. Let's face it, reading the comments here, most of the people who have said I like to hear music have caveated with unless it's xxx. Either any music is okay, or perhaps you can imagine that your personal choice of music might just be somebody else's xxx.

Well done OP on being considerate, and suggest DH uses an Ipod with headphones.

twofingerstoGideon · 25/05/2013 22:52

YANBU. I don't understand why anyone thinks other people want to listen to their music. It's rude and intrusive and cannot compare to the sounds of children playing, etc...

NewGirlInTown · 25/05/2013 22:55

Mermaid I think you are extremely considerate and wish you were my neighbour.
Last Bank Holiday (the last sunny day here!) neighbours has music so loud in their garden, all day, it ruined the bank holiday for every other home in our cul de sac, and there wasn't a room in our house where we could get away from it. I would never knowingly inflict noise misery on others. Any political party which got tough on noise polluters would get my vote!
