To have developed a massive crush on Roger Allam's voice?

I liked him well enough when he was actually on-screen (Foyle's War, The Thick Of It, Endeavour) but not in that way, IYSWIM. However, I've recently been listening to R4's Cabin Pressure on CD and have begun harbouring filthy thoughts just on his voice alone. It's just so.... seductive .

How am I going to watch Sarah & Duck with DS now without getting a faraway expression and dribbling slightly ?

Have you heard him singing?

Thurlow · 24/05/2013 21:45

He sounds amazing on Cabin Pressure. YADNBU.

LoveMyBoots · 24/05/2013 21:48

Not at all unreasonable!

I could listen to Cabin Pressure, specifically RA, all day.

DryCounty79 · 24/05/2013 21:52

Your post made me think of the comedy program Black Books, the episode called The Big Lock-Out. If you've ever seen it, you'll know why :-)

Ubermumsy · 24/05/2013 21:53

He gets most of the best lines too, which helps. I was laughing like a drain at it on the M6 today (and let's face it, you need something to keep your spirits up on that stretch of road).

dry, ooh no, not seen that one. Will try to find it.

Dry Grin

"Do you want me to come, Fran? I'll come. I'm coming, Fran."

francesdrake · 25/05/2013 07:58

YANBU. Peter Manni-yum, indeed.

minouminou · 25/05/2013 08:26

Ha ha ha!
I can imagine DS being like Peter Mannion in 50 years! He has the same sort of delivery and attitude already. He even once, when struggling through homework, announced: "I'm BORED with this.....".
No Twix, though.

DryCounty79 · 25/05/2013 10:22

Thurlow, exactly!
I think you're only about the 3rd person I've 'met' who has even heard of Black Books, let alone knows exactly what I was referring to :-D

DryCounty79 · 25/05/2013 10:23

Please excuse terrible grammar, brain not yet functioning!

Ubermumsy · 25/05/2013 10:56

Heard of (and indeed enjoyed) Black Books, but can't place that episode.

Has anyone else heard of Sunnyside Farm? Phil Daniels, Mark whatsit, Michael Kitchen et al? I've never met anyone else who watched that.

I thought I was the only woman in the world who fell in love with his voice. I could listen to it for hours, it's like having warm golden syrup pored in your ears. Even when he swears in The Thick of It it sounds lovely. When he was in Endeavour he had a slight cockney accent but I could cope with that.

Thurlow · 25/05/2013 12:11

Fran meets an old friend (Peter Serefanovitch?) who has an amazing voice. Black Books is just the greatest.

Roger Allam grew to become my favourite character in TTOI. That scene where he is at the top of the kids slide with Stuart is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Along with "I'm bored of this, I'm going for a Twix..." Grin

minouminou · 25/05/2013 12:19

You bought a bank? Out of social embarrassment?

catpark · 25/05/2013 13:04

Roger Allam was the first inspector Javert in les miserables. He'll be all over youtube. Pretty sure he was on the cast cd as well.

hackmum · 25/05/2013 13:05

Love Roger Allam. Love him in Cabin Pressure. Love him in TTOI. Once saw him in Much Ado About Nothing and loved him in that.

Just generally love him, really. (If you hadn't guessed.)

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 25/05/2013 13:17

Cabin Pressure rocks! Roger Allam is the topping on the Cumberbatch-flavoured cake Grin

hackmum · 25/05/2013 14:31

Does Mumsnet have a Radio Addicts forum like its Telly Addicts forum? It ought to, if only so that Cabin Pressure fans could go and share our favourite bits with each other.

hackmum · 25/05/2013 14:36

One of my favourites from TTOI - when Stuart tries to give Peter Mannion a new image:

LoveMyBoots · 25/05/2013 20:27

I love Black Books too, that episode with the shipping forecast is v funny. But every episode is v funny.

After the Twix episode in TTOI, I've developed a really weird craving for them.

RA was also in the movie Tamara Drewe. He was fab in that too.

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn · 25/05/2013 21:06

We discuss Cabin Pressure quite a bit in the Benedict Cumberbatch thread in Sleb Twaddle Grin

Agree there should be a CP thread somewhere though.

Peevish · 25/05/2013 21:39

I adore him. Have seen him on stage several times, and he was wonderful whether he was a pantomime villain or in Shakespeare.

rabbitlady · 25/05/2013 23:12

he does well in 'duck'. as for the rest, no, he doesn't work for me. particularly in cabin pressure. dreadful. radio 4, home of dire comedy.

Ubermumsy · 11/06/2013 12:49

Ah come on rabbit, that's a little harsh. You mean to say you hate all R4 comedy, even The Men From The Ministry? Confused

My favourite from CP is still making me giggle. "What a ridiculous dog." "My dog is not ridiculous!" "Then whose dog is this?"
