I sent a friend a pic of DS2 with the following text

"Look at my . Isn't he handsome?"

The reply

"He needs to clean his shoes"

and I'm more than a bit angry I'm all ranty and how fucking dare you diss my darling child

Maybe it is just her sense of humour. I have a friend who would probably reply with something similar.

We were exchanging recent photos and this person had sent me a few others with "isn't this cute" and "isn't this nice" so it was kind of in the flow of the conversation.

But yes, I've now had a laugh and a word with myself and AIBU.

Probably struggling for a reply, came up with a less than flattering one!

Maybe you should ask yourself why you think it's ok to put pictures of your kid up with dirty shoes on

"not this girl. I notice charm and wit and sparkling repartee before I notice shoes. And it doesn't look to me like he's struggling on the girl front"

Its was a joke, and yes as others have said, nothing less than you should expect when fishing for compliments

I'm not sure about girls, but men definitely notice shoes. I know of at least 2 job candidates who have been crossed off the list (by a male interviewer) because they presented at interview with less than shiny shoes. So your friend is offering valuable life advice.
