it's common in many places to state the nationality or gender in job and accomodation ads. In fact, looking through the Gulf Times, every ad states male or female and nationality, ie male Sri Lankan needed for accounts office. Maybe they have not been in the Uk long. It doesn't make me clutch my pearls, non issue really.

It said 'female staff wanted' tiger rather than just 'staff'.

Yanbu but just out of interest, what do places like Hooters do? Are they exempt? And if so then why them and not a take away? Both are food service places, what's the difference?

This sort of thing makes me really mad. I am currently job hunting and have noticed two adds recently, one asking for a polish women to work in an office and another for a house keeper wanting specifically a Pakistani women.

yaimee that's a really good question. Have you ever seen an advert for a waitress job there that says 'wanted: women with large breasts'?

The advert I saw was for a new coffee shop I think. The text didn't strike me as being written by someone who has English as their first language.

I just looked, they actually call them 'Hooters Girls' so that might give them an out.

Not that that excuses anything, I'm surprised the agency accepted the advert unless it was something they posted themselves on a job site. I'm new to jobhunting so don't know how things are done these days

A special licence is needed for the likes of Hooters and "adult" places, the licence will state the size of premises and the number of staff etc, so they then can advertise a particular gender. All female gyms etc can do the same, I think that it is right that this is still allowed for jobs that don't involve personal care. The clever way of getting round a particular culture, is to ask for "Polish speaking" etc and then just hire the actual Polish, applicant.

According to Wikipedia a number of men have successfully sued Hooters for not hiring them as waiters.

glad they have changed it. i wonder why they specifically thought they needed female staff?

on a side note. does anyone know if it's legal to advertise a flat and specify only over 40's ?
