To think that my DH should take his bike outside

I know its not a big deal in the scheme of things but it gets on my nerves. Dh loves bikes and owns 3. He used to be a cycle courier and loved it but had to stop due to our family expanding. He loves tinkering with his bike, changing parts around and trying to improve it, but he sometimes does it in our dining room which i think is disgusting, its unhygienic and our dining room is also one of the bikes' home. I want it out. I've suggested putting it outside, he says it will rust. I've suggested getting a cover and putting it outside, he said wind will get into it and make it fall over. He won't put it in the shed as its too far, it really isn't and/or its too full. He is a great husband and father and does so much in the house but I really really hate the bike. AIBU to want it out.

YANBU. Bikes live in sheds.

Alternatively, he can eat his meals in the shed and keep his bike in the dinning room. His choice.

Seriously though, they definitely belong outside, if he doesn't want to go to the shed, perhaps he should build them a lean-to beside the back door. Something like this

I think YANBU, but actually as the wife of a bike-obsessed man, I know my place, and it is way below the stable of bikes
We're fortunate to have a garage now, so they nearly all live in there, but one very special one still lives indoors! DH definitely wouldn't keep his in a shed, because it wouldn't be secure enough for his liking. They lived in the spare room in our old, tiny house. I think a metal storage close to the house might be a reasonable compromise.
I don't see how bikes are unhygienic though - as long as they're clean. If he doesn't wash them, then he obviously doesn't love them enough

We got this bike tent for the garden and I put it by the back door so that much closer than the shed. It takes 3 bikes, is quite cheap (you can find them for under £40), looks okay (we have plants growing over ours) and stops the bikes being in the house. It is totally waterproof and won't blow over.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with work being done on a bike indoors if it's cold out.

I wouldn't want a bike permanently in the house-other than a hall or maybe utility room.

Not sure it's really unhygienic though, unless the tyres are covered in shit & muddy/oily parts are all over the table whilst you are eating!

We are contemplating moving house in the next couple of years. We are agreed that we need at least a double garage or workshop to store all the bikes. It's not just DH though, me as well

As a friend said the other day, the required number of bikes is n+1 where n is the current number!

I've got a bike enthusiast, but they mostly live in the shed bike house. I resisted all attempts to hang the "nice bike" in the stairwell as "art". FFS, we are not students ! They do make frequent appearances in the kitchen for general tinkering and sprucing, and mostly one lives in the narrow victorian hallway overnight for commuting.
To be honest, it only drives me mad on the days when DH decides to take the train to work and can't be arsed to shove the bike in the shed. Then I tend to sling it in there rather forcefully...
Bike theft is rife and they are generally worth a lot more than your house insurance will cover so I'd suggest a metal bike lock up if funds and space will run to it Some of them have shelving and all sorts for all the general bike paraphernalia. You never know, he might get all enthusiastic about rehoming it if the favourite bike has a nice place to live and you start drying clothes on it in the dining room

You wouldn't keep a set of ipads in a tent by the back door, would you?

Thank you so much for all the responses and the great storage ideas. I'm really glad to know that I'm not the only one to be annoyed by it. I think it's unhygienic as its out there in the street. I'm sure he only notices half the poo and crap he rides in. I'm going to forward the links to him and hopefully we can come to some kind of compromise!! Thanks ya'll.

My racing bike currently resides in my kitchen. Its far too valuable to be outside, at risk of theft.

They do let women ride bikes too these days...

Diddl you asked about his other bikes? One is outside and the other is in the shed. The 'good' one is in the house.

If we had outside space I would consider keeping my bike outside, but only if we had a very secure lock up -bike thefts from sheds are rife.

Imtoo my garden really isn't that big at all, he's just using that as an excuse.

Just seen you updated about the hygiene issue - if your DH is anything like me, there's no way he'd be riding through poo or any other rubbish on his good bike.

I bet he doesn't even take his best bike out in bad weather.

OP - for me personally, this would probably be a 'pick your battles' moment and I would let it go, but to be fair I'm not the one staring at a bike in the dining room every day I just have to stop DP firing arrows into the table

What happens when you want to use that room, say, you have guests for dinner?

And how much tinkering can one do with a bike anyway? wheels. check. seat. check. brakes. well, carry on keeping it in the dining room and we'll see...

My bike resides in the Kitchen and will stay there till we can afford to get bike shed that can't be broken into easily (which is never...as there are so many other bikes things to buy ). Dp doen't complain as my bike saves us a fortune in train fares.

Really can't see what's so unhygenic about a bike tbh.
