Buying from a breeder will make sod all difference. If the owners are shit, then the owners are shit.

And my parents have 4 dogs, they live in a farm house with 45 acres, so they certainly do have the room.

I do believe that's dogs become very difficult to manage once there number become more than 2 as they become a pack

You are correct that buying dogs from a reputable breeder is a must. However it is ridiculous to say that no one in London has space for five dogs in the same way that it would be ridiculous to say no one in London had space for five children. It depends entirely on the resources you have available, your circumstances and ability to meet their needs.

In any case the house where the girl tragically died was not in London. Whatever happened in what are evidently rather unusual circumstances is clearly a tragedy for that child's family and friends and I feel it's rather bad taste to use it to make some sort of bizarre point on an Internet forum.

People can and do have the room.

I feel for the poor girl and her family and am sad for the dogs who have also been let down.

We have 3 dogs and live in London, zone 2. They're small dogs, we have a large house, they struggle to savage a large cushion 'as a pack' let alone a human.

I don't think it matters where you get the dog from, putting aside attitudes to puppy farming etc, its how you care for the dog and raise the dog. A bit like saying your child was born in a really dodgy hospital, midwives were awful etc (am aware dogs are not babies), it has little baring on the future behaviour if you get them as puppies. Obviously once older previous owners will have had more influence.

Also girl died in manchester. It sounds a horrible situation, a complete tragedy and I don't think its exactly clear what happened to an outsider.

I have 5 dogs, 2 greyhounds, 1 basset hound, 1 German shepherd x rottie and a staffy. All rescues, live in a 2bed house but space isn't an issue. There well walked and well trained. No issues.

We've got a bloke round here with a 3 bed house and 16 Crocodiles.. Mind you they aren't from Gumtree so he should be fine.

Whilst it is saying it happened in Manchester [Greater Manchester is a region] it was actually nearer Wigan my sister told me about it yesterday as her partner phoned her about it, was only a few doors down from his and he couldn't go out front door had to use back entrance if he wanted to go out. A tragedy really.

So its not the amount of dogs or weather the space you have is big enough

Is the trainning of the owner do you think a dog licence would of helped

And this may be a red herring but i dont belive you are allowed to have 5 dogs in a council home which i belived they lived in

HA have they're own rules about pet ownership and tenants still flout the rules always have done. Domjolly majority of dogs are very well trained its those that let the dog be in charge that have problems, my good friend has a staffie and he would lick you to death.

i seen those husky tupe dogs round here and i know people keep saying its not he size of your home but thise dogs are huge and the houses round here are tiney and you pretty much only have a court yard

I have no idea how to stop this happening, it's absolutely fine if people have the space, they are trained and walked, that is what I call a responsible owner.

However when you have a small courtyard and five dogs, who all live in the tiny back porch, who look like they don't really get fed you might see the owner throw dog food on the floor outside every once in a while, they now eat each others poop (lovely) the garden looks like Mount Everest with the amount of poop. Oh and these dogs don't get walked anywhere at all. They also have a cat that's neglected and isn't allowed in

According to the papers today, the owner was a breeder and sold the dogs on Facebook.

I'm amazed that any breeder, assuming they have knowledge of the dogs and their natural behaviours, would leave a child unattended in the house with them.

charlearose My friend has a french mastiff and, while he is a beautiful big softie, that is because he is well trained and I am with his owners when I see him. I would not fancy my chances against him in the wrong circumstances!

There are irresponsible idiots out there - you can't stop them getting behind the wheel of a car irrespective of tax/insurance/licence and driving dangerously.

Similarly, whatever laws may be put in place around dog ownership you will still get idiots who will ignore them and behave irresponsibly.

I don't know what can be done to prevent this kind of tragic attack.
